I was first referred to Joel by my sister who had gotten in a bad accident a year before mine. I called him, set a meeting, and met at his old louisville office. (Its a stunning building.) He's a laid back guy, has a good sense of humor, and is very professional. He's not a slip-and-fall-my-neck-suddently-hurts lawyer. He's legitimate, not a lazy or self serving lawyer. He works to get you healed first, and paid second. If another car ever wipes me off the road again, I'll be calling Joel.

He did all the research to make sure that I would be protected as this was a new business venture for me. He always kept clear communication with me through the whole process and was eager to help answer all of my questions. He was very thorough and very timely. Zach has represented me in three different cases now, and each time, his expertise has been invaluable. Before I contacted Zach for the first time, I had hired a larger firm to represent me in a matter. This firm got a settlement check, but never resolved my original problem. I had written off hiring legal representation again after that experience. With my first case with Zach, he worked above and beyond to make sure every detail was taken care of. Even when the other party "lost" recordings and documents we specifically requested in discovery, he didn't back down. We ended up with a settlement that was satisfactory, considering the wrong the other party (a debt collector) had done. The second case involved a vehicle repossession due to loss of full time work. After repossession, the creditor claimed I owed them a $10,000 deficiency balance. I didn't have the income to properly pay an attorney, but Zach worked with me and this case for over a year, and right before jury selection, managed to convince the creditor to settle for $500. I can't say enough good things about Zach. I appreciate his honesty and his willingness to fight for those who don't always have the means or resources to defend themselves. It's hard to find someone you can trust to actually protect *your* interests, not just pursue their own. Like I said, in my previous experience, the firm I went with didn't care about anything except their percentage of the settlement. I know from experience that Zach is about much more than that, and I'm thankful.

I try to tell my story to everyone and I'm glad I have the opportunity to let people know how Zachary Taylor protected me from being fully taken advantage of. I received a summons from a credit company. The one that called me to the point I was afraid of my phone. I googled "summons from credit card company" and Zachary's page was the first to pop up. His page filled me with hope so I called immediately. That was the best decision I have made. This credit card was only a $3500 limit but somehow they wanted to get me for close to $10,000. He used the law and my rights to fight this down. All the way down! In fact we tried too settle and I almost signed a agreement with them but he saw they tried to get me for fees and Zachary didn't like that idea and he sent it back. He knows the law and our rights!

Robyn and I graduated high school together, many years ago, which is how I know her. Robyn has always been polite and well-spoken. Recently I found myself in a situation with a former employer that was a surprise to me. During this time in my life, my livelihood was turned upside down. Even though I knew Robyn prior to my case, I was not aware that Robyn was an employment attorney, until she reached out to me regarding another case that my name was brought up in, that she was working on. On that same phone call I questioned Robyn about the type of law that she practiced. Robyn informed me that she was an employment attorney who dealt with employees that were wrongfully terminated, discrimination, retaliation, etc.. This information is what I needed to hear at that time. I asked Robyn if she had time to speak with me briefly and to look over some paperwork that I had received a few weeks ago regarding my wrongful termination with my former employer. Robyn agreed. Robyn took notes as she listened to my concerns and advised me that she would look over everything including my paperwork and would return my call to discuss the matter further. While I waited to hear back from Robyn I started to Google her to find out information regarding her and her prior cases. I was in awe with the information that I found out but not really surprised due to the person I knew in high school. After researching Robyn for several hours I knew that she was the attorney that I wanted to handle my case if she deemed that I had one. Robyn returned my call a few days later and agreed to handle my case. From that point on Robyn has been very thorough with me, upfront about all of my options, and has worked tireless hours on my case as well as keeping me informed. Not only has Robyn been professional about handling my case, she has also been there to assist me through some dark times. I feel as if Robyn can sense when something is wrong and will call to check in on me. This has not been an easy journey but I could not have picked a better attorney to represent me during one of the worst times in my life. Robyn has also had my best interest at hand through all of this while standing firm with the other side. Robyn is the epitome of excellence when dealing with her clients. I highly recommend Robyn Smith. Robyn is the best out there!

I cannot say enough good about Robyn as an attorney and person. I had a situation arise that needed legal assistance and eventually representation and I am beyond blessed that I was led to her. From the first time I reached out to her I knew she was the person that could help me navigate a very difficult period in my professional and personal life. I found her at a time when most others were failing to even acknowledge me as a person and it was affecting me in ever way imaginable. She was patient, open minded, open hearted and genuine in a way that shows without words that you've got a fighter on your side that won't back down. She took the time to get to know me, my situation, and is doing all she can to advocate for me and be my voice. She has helped me to be in the best possible place mentally and emotionally while guiding me through my suit. She can be tough when she has to be but she handles those times with such professionalism and decorum it's enviable. Robyn is incredibly hard working, dedicated to honesty, and doesn't roll over when other attorneys might. She takes her cases and her clients seriously and really works to right the wrongs. She knows my case and I backwards and forwards and has quite an admirable respect for the law, due process, and fair working environments for all workers. If you have been wronged and need legal advice or counsel I can't recommend her highly enough. With her experience and knowledge of federal and state laws I guarantee you can't go wrong.

Brandon helped me through a very difficult time in my life. I was just fired from job, my bills were piling up, and fiancée had left me. When I chose to sue my employer for wrongful termination, Brandon devoted hours of time discussing my case with me. He evaluated all of my possible claims, and was very honest about the likelihood success. Brandon fought hard when the my former employer sought to discredit me, and fought even harder to show my supervisor's illegal motives. When time came to settle the case I felt well informed and vindicated.

We recently settled a case for our father. Hans, Jami and Scarlette were very friendly, they kept us updated, and always answered any questions without making us feel inferior. They worked as a team to ensure that your needs are met. The office is nice and clean, but they worked to make sure that most of our meetings were closer to us or video conference. I would recommend Poppe Law Firm for your legal services. You won't be disappointed.

The team at Satterley & Kelley did an amazing job representing my family on behalf of our father. Since our case came up follow my fathers death, I was concerned about preserving the integrity of his name. Statterley & Kelley ensured he was represented with dignity and in a manner he would want. The team fought hard and they fought fair, all while preserving our fathers memory. Beyond happy with what they were able to achieve for our family.

My husband and I began our relationship with Paul Kelley a few months after my husband's diagnosis with mesothelioma. Paul kept us informed during the process of resolving settlements in regard to his exposure to asbestos. He was always very professional, compassionate and informative while navigating this situation through its completion. After my husband died, Paul continued to discuss with me at length, updating me as necessary, the developments that transpired. He made me feel my situation and loss were important to him and patiently answered any questions that I had. This being said, I highly recommend Paul and his law firm in handling your legal matters.

Immediately upon meeting with Stewart, I was sure that I had made the right decision. He was confident, knowledgeable, and quick to respond. At a time when I was overwhelmed and completely unsure, it was comforting to know that Stewart was taking care of everything. He kept me up to date on my case at all times and was always available to answer any questions that I had. It was very apparent that he did his research in my case. While the circumstances were unfortunate, I am happy to have worked with such a genuine person who also happens to be an excellent attorney.

Ched in my opinion is the best in his field. He took a situation where I was hurt, scared, and unsure about my future. Taking the lead from day one. He gave me step by step instructions, and reassurance that I was in good hands. Giving me confidence to make it through one of the most difficult times in my life and career. I will forever be grateful for his hasty Professionalism, but also his sincere concern for my overall well being. Ched never failed to keep me up to speed on each detail, but also was genuinely concerned about me personally. Even calling after surgery, and keeping up with my recovery . He’s not just an awesome attorney but now considered a dear friend.

What a Wrongful Termination Lawyer Can Do for You

A wrongful termination lawyer specializes in representing employees who have been illegally fired or laid off from their jobs. Wrongful termination occurs when an employer violates federal or state laws, employment agreements, or public policy when dismissing an employee. These lawyers help clients understand their rights, evaluate the legality of their termination, and pursue legal action to recover damages such as lost wages, benefits, and emotional distress.

If you believe you have been wrongfully terminated, a lawyer can guide you through the complex legal process, negotiate with your former employer, and advocate on your behalf to achieve a fair resolution.

When Should I Hire a Wrongful Termination Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a wrongful termination lawyer if you have been fired under circumstances that may violate the law. Common reasons include:

  • Discrimination: If you were terminated based on your race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 or older), disability, or genetic information, this may constitute illegal discrimination under federal laws like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Retaliation: If you were fired for reporting illegal activities, discrimination, harassment, or for participating in an investigation or lawsuit against your employer, this may be illegal retaliation.
  • Violation of Employment Contract: If you have an employment contract that outlines specific terms for termination and your employer breaches these terms, you may have a claim for wrongful termination.
  • Public Policy Violations: If you were terminated for reasons that violate public policy, such as refusing to engage in illegal activities, taking time off for jury duty, or exercising your legal rights (e.g., taking family medical leave), a lawyer can help.
  • Whistleblower Protection: If you were fired after reporting your employer's illegal activities to a government agency (whistleblowing), you may be protected under specific laws.

Hiring a lawyer promptly is crucial, as there are strict deadlines (statutes of limitations) for filing wrongful termination claims.

What Does a Wrongful Termination Lawyer Do?

A wrongful termination lawyer provides various services to help you pursue a claim against your former employer:

  • Case Evaluation: Assess the facts of your termination to determine if your employer violated any laws or breached your employment contract.
  • Legal Advice: Explain your rights under federal and state laws and advise on the best course of action.
  • Filing Claims: Assist in filing a complaint with appropriate government agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or state labor departments, if required before suing.
  • Negotiation: Engage in settlement discussions with your former employer to seek compensation without going to court.
  • Litigation: Represent you in court if a lawsuit is necessary, presenting evidence, questioning witnesses, and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Documentation and Evidence Gathering: Help collect and organize necessary documents, such as employment contracts, company policies, performance reviews, emails, and witness statements.
  • Protecting Against Retaliation: Advise you on how to handle any retaliation or further adverse actions from your former employer.

How Are Wrongful Termination Lawyers Paid?

Wrongful termination lawyers typically charge for their services in one of the following ways:

  • Contingency Fee: Many work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if you win or settle your case. Their fee is a percentage of the compensation you receive, usually ranging from 25% to 40%.
  • Hourly Rate: Some lawyers charge an hourly rate, which can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on experience and location.
  • Retainer Fee: A retainer is an upfront payment against which the lawyer bills their hourly rate. Once the retainer is exhausted, you may need to replenish it.
  • Flat Fee: For specific services, such as reviewing a severance agreement, a lawyer might charge a flat fee.

It's important to discuss payment arrangements during your initial consultation to understand how fees and expenses will be handled.

How Much Does a Wrongful Termination Lawyer Cost?

The cost varies based on the complexity of your case, the lawyer's experience, and the fee arrangement:

  • Contingency Fees: If you win or settle, the lawyer's fee will be a percentage of the award. For example, if you settle for $100,000 and the contingency fee is 30%, the lawyer receives $30,000.
  • Hourly Rates: Total costs depend on the number of hours worked. A straightforward case might require 20 hours ($4,000 to $12,000), while complex cases can exceed 100 hours.
  • Additional Expenses: Be aware of other costs such as court filing fees, costs for depositions, expert witness fees, and administrative expenses, which may be billed separately.

Always request a written fee agreement detailing all potential costs.

Top Questions to Ask a Wrongful Termination Lawyer

  1. What is your experience with wrongful termination cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience and a successful track record.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Understand the fee structure and any additional costs.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Get an honest assessment of your chances of success and potential compensation.
  4. What is the estimated timeline for resolving my case?
Know how long the process may take, from filing to settlement or trial.
  5. What steps will you take to build my case?
Understand the strategy and what will be required from you.
  6. Will my case go to trial, or can it be settled out of court?
Discuss the possibilities and implications of each option.
  7. How will you keep me informed about my case?
Ensure there will be regular updates and open communication.

How to Check the Credibility of a Wrongful Termination Lawyer

  • Verify Their License: Check your state's bar association website to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  • Review Their Experience: Look for lawyers who specialize in employment law and have specific experience with wrongful termination cases.
  • Read Client Reviews: Websites like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google Reviews can provide insights into the lawyer's reputation.
  • Ask for References: Reputable lawyers should be willing to provide references from past clients.
  • Professional Memberships: Membership in organizations like the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) indicates a focus on employment law.
  • Disciplinary Record: Ensure the lawyer has no history of disciplinary actions or complaints.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting:

  • Employment Documents: Bring your employment contract, employee handbook, offer letters, termination letter, and any severance agreements.
  • Performance Records: Include performance reviews, commendations, or any disciplinary actions.
  • Correspondence: Provide emails, texts, or memos related to your termination or any incidents leading up to it.
  • Witness Information: List names and contact information of colleagues who can support your claims.
  • Timeline of Events: Prepare a detailed account of events, including dates and descriptions of incidents.
  • Previous Complaints: If you filed complaints with HR or external agencies, bring copies.
  • Questions: Write down any questions you have about your case or the legal process.

Being well-prepared helps the lawyer assess your situation effectively and advise you on the best course of action.
