If you are looking for a great unemployment lawyer look no further! Jacob was extremely helpful, straightforward and knowledgeable. After explaining my situation with my former employer, he took the time to answer all my questions and provided guidance despite knowing there was nothing on it for him since I had already signed my severance agreement. Would certainly recommend him to anyone in a similar situation!

I had reached out to Jean to discuss/review a separation agreement that I received from my employer. She was very accessible - I was able to speak with her directly on my first outreach (vs. many other firms who required a detailed questionnaire or discussion with a paralegal). Based upon that first conversation, it was clear that she had good intentions (it wasn't all about how much she would make from the settlement) - her desire was to help me achieve an appropriate outcome. She came across as experienced, measured and fair. I ultimately had her step in to help with the negotiation and was happy with the overall result. Jean was recommended to me by another employment lawyer that is highly regarded - very glad I had the opportunity to work with her.

When a person is wrongly terminated it takes away more than your job. You loose the essence of who you are, your confidence, your trust in people, how you interact with the outside world. You feel ashamed. But, Jean was able to change all that for me and my termination turned out to be a blessing. Jean gave me hope from the very first conversation. She and Katherine won my case and the money was great but what they really did was continually make me know that the termination wasn’t my fault. They believed in me. I lived across the country from Jean but it felt as though she was right next door. She was in contact when necessary and was always available when I needed to ask something. She allowed me to make decisions on my case and always gave me options and suggestions. Her guidance and in sight was right on target, I trusted her and she was very successful for me. I am forever grateful.

Ariel represented and guided me through a collaborative divorce. Throughout the entire process she was professional, reliable, patient and communicative. She was compassionate and supportive through a very difficult and emotional process. Ariel understands the nuances and challenges of this major life transition and has the tools, both her own, and referrals to other specialists, to represent her clients to fullest extent. Whenever an issue arises I know I will get excellent advice or representation if needed. I highly recommend Ariel for any type of family law issue that needs mediating and representation.

I used Winger Mediation many years ago. My wife at the time and I both wanted an efficient and non-conflict separation, for ourselves but more so for our daughter and Ariel was the exact right choice for us. She guided us through the process and we were able to get to a smooth conclusion without a lot of challenge. When issues arose, she explained the balance of interests and was able to get us to a mutually agreed to solution. Highly recommend her services.

Prior to my being able to retire, I was "let go" from my position. As a professor, I had never received a bad review in my seventeen years of employment, and my students were very positive about my teaching. I had published books, represented my institution here and abroad and organized major colloquiums. My identity was wrapped up in being a professor, so I was at a complete loss about what to do when I lost my job. I will always be grateful for the help and understanding I received from William Corman. When he entered the picture, his sterling reputation was recognized by my former employers. His efforts on my behalf were taken very seriously. Any attempt I would have made regarding a settlement would have been dismissed. I ended up with a sum of money that would see me through a couple of years if I needed it. Time to pause and reflect on the future without the stress of financial hardship was essential -- required in order to think clearly and logically about how to go forward instead of falling into a lengthy depression. I thank William Corman for his help in making it possible to find my way to work that I enjoy. I am paid considerably more than a professor in my current job. I have recommended William Corman to others, and will return to him myself if I need an attorney. I should mention that my settlement was reached without having to go to court. That was a blessing. And, to add to the positive: William Corman is a personable, kind human being. His presence and attention to our conversations made a painful time for me much less difficult.

I found myself in a serious employment situation, and was referred to Bill Corman by my sister who had researched local best practice attorneys for me. Bill was incredibly responsive, knowledgeable and articulate about the legal aspects of my case. He is direct and honest, and clearly has a wealth of experience and expertise in labor law. He kept me informed through the process, stayed on point despite my tendency to meander off on my emotions, and was very respectful of my finances in regards to his fees. He was always professional, respectful, and non- judgmental as he gathered information about the case. Bill was able to quickly achieve a positive outcome, and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone with a labor/employment issue. He is results oriented and it is apparent that he genuinely cares about the best interests of his clients. If you must seek legal counsel, Bill can definitely get results and minimize the painfulness of the process.

I had taken on a large company where I had worked for personal wrong-doing. I received a lot of rejections from other attorneys; however, I knew that I had a strong case, and knew I just needed to find the RIGHT attorney that saw what I saw in my case. Then, I met Mr. Corman. He invited me into his office, and listen intently to what I had to say, asked questions, reviewed some documentation that I had. By the end of the meeting he told me that he would take on my case. He also gave me a clear and accurate assessment of how much the fees would be ( he stayed true to this to the end of the case). There were subsequent meetings after that, and he never gave up on me or the case - always keeping me apprised on the progression of my case. To make a long story short - We won the case!!! Without Mr. Corman's dedication, and belief in me and my case - I could not have won. Thanks again, Mr Corman.

I hired Kevin to represent me in a legal matter involving a workplace issue. During the year he represented me in this matter he was terrific - always available to answer questions and guide me, offered the right legal advice for my case and never backed down against my employer in order to do what was right and legal for me. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone seeking a lawyer and if need be, I would hire him again in a heart beat to represent me. This attorney was assigned me in 2010 in my age discrimination case against an East Bay employer. For 6 months, we conferred on a weekly basis, to identify a full palette of discriminatory actions taken by my former employer. Mr. Darahan was attentive, thorough, & helped me think through the complex issues. Together, with the help of one of the partners in the law firm, we were able to get come to a satisfactory mediated settlement with said employer. I would not hesitate to recommend him to someone fighting an age-discrimination matter.

Ms. Rubinoff represented me several years ago during an escalating employee/employer dispute with Patelco Credit Union. Her calm disposition put me at ease during a very frustating period. She asked excellent questions during the fact-finding stage. She pushed me to be candid where I was concerned that the truth might not help me. She provided me with a map for securing closure in my relationship with a former employer. I was immediately impressed with how quickly she responded to messages even if she was only advising me that she would be unavailable for a while. I was kept current on all communications between her office and the employer's attorneys. Ms. Rubinoff helped me to organize my thoughts and articulate my percieved harm. In addition she was able to help my then wife feel comfortable with the legal process as well. We did not walk away from the negotiations with large amounts of money and that never seemed to be her focus; we walked away with my dignity firmly in place having been represented in the most professional and aggressive way possible , given my individual circumstances.

All what lawyers want is money and this guy was not the exception. My husband paid him $10k and we didn't hear from him after like 8 or 9 months, and it was not even Arash the one in touch, it was one of his assistants. We didn't see him face to face until I arrived to the USA only because he wanted more money to start the process of the green card and because we didn't pay, he stopped answering all the questions we had after my arrival. I am sure there are better lawyers that charge less for a K1 Visa.

What a Wrongful Termination Lawyer Can Do for You

A wrongful termination lawyer specializes in representing employees who have been illegally fired or laid off from their jobs. Wrongful termination occurs when an employer violates federal or state laws, employment agreements, or public policy when dismissing an employee. These lawyers help clients understand their rights, evaluate the legality of their termination, and pursue legal action to recover damages such as lost wages, benefits, and emotional distress.

If you believe you have been wrongfully terminated, a lawyer can guide you through the complex legal process, negotiate with your former employer, and advocate on your behalf to achieve a fair resolution.

When Should I Hire a Wrongful Termination Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a wrongful termination lawyer if you have been fired under circumstances that may violate the law. Common reasons include:

  • Discrimination: If you were terminated based on your race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 or older), disability, or genetic information, this may constitute illegal discrimination under federal laws like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Retaliation: If you were fired for reporting illegal activities, discrimination, harassment, or for participating in an investigation or lawsuit against your employer, this may be illegal retaliation.
  • Violation of Employment Contract: If you have an employment contract that outlines specific terms for termination and your employer breaches these terms, you may have a claim for wrongful termination.
  • Public Policy Violations: If you were terminated for reasons that violate public policy, such as refusing to engage in illegal activities, taking time off for jury duty, or exercising your legal rights (e.g., taking family medical leave), a lawyer can help.
  • Whistleblower Protection: If you were fired after reporting your employer's illegal activities to a government agency (whistleblowing), you may be protected under specific laws.

Hiring a lawyer promptly is crucial, as there are strict deadlines (statutes of limitations) for filing wrongful termination claims.

What Does a Wrongful Termination Lawyer Do?

A wrongful termination lawyer provides various services to help you pursue a claim against your former employer:

  • Case Evaluation: Assess the facts of your termination to determine if your employer violated any laws or breached your employment contract.
  • Legal Advice: Explain your rights under federal and state laws and advise on the best course of action.
  • Filing Claims: Assist in filing a complaint with appropriate government agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or state labor departments, if required before suing.
  • Negotiation: Engage in settlement discussions with your former employer to seek compensation without going to court.
  • Litigation: Represent you in court if a lawsuit is necessary, presenting evidence, questioning witnesses, and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Documentation and Evidence Gathering: Help collect and organize necessary documents, such as employment contracts, company policies, performance reviews, emails, and witness statements.
  • Protecting Against Retaliation: Advise you on how to handle any retaliation or further adverse actions from your former employer.

How Are Wrongful Termination Lawyers Paid?

Wrongful termination lawyers typically charge for their services in one of the following ways:

  • Contingency Fee: Many work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if you win or settle your case. Their fee is a percentage of the compensation you receive, usually ranging from 25% to 40%.
  • Hourly Rate: Some lawyers charge an hourly rate, which can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on experience and location.
  • Retainer Fee: A retainer is an upfront payment against which the lawyer bills their hourly rate. Once the retainer is exhausted, you may need to replenish it.
  • Flat Fee: For specific services, such as reviewing a severance agreement, a lawyer might charge a flat fee.

It's important to discuss payment arrangements during your initial consultation to understand how fees and expenses will be handled.

How Much Does a Wrongful Termination Lawyer Cost?

The cost varies based on the complexity of your case, the lawyer's experience, and the fee arrangement:

  • Contingency Fees: If you win or settle, the lawyer's fee will be a percentage of the award. For example, if you settle for $100,000 and the contingency fee is 30%, the lawyer receives $30,000.
  • Hourly Rates: Total costs depend on the number of hours worked. A straightforward case might require 20 hours ($4,000 to $12,000), while complex cases can exceed 100 hours.
  • Additional Expenses: Be aware of other costs such as court filing fees, costs for depositions, expert witness fees, and administrative expenses, which may be billed separately.

Always request a written fee agreement detailing all potential costs.

Top Questions to Ask a Wrongful Termination Lawyer

  1. What is your experience with wrongful termination cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience and a successful track record.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Understand the fee structure and any additional costs.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Get an honest assessment of your chances of success and potential compensation.
  4. What is the estimated timeline for resolving my case?
Know how long the process may take, from filing to settlement or trial.
  5. What steps will you take to build my case?
Understand the strategy and what will be required from you.
  6. Will my case go to trial, or can it be settled out of court?
Discuss the possibilities and implications of each option.
  7. How will you keep me informed about my case?
Ensure there will be regular updates and open communication.

How to Check the Credibility of a Wrongful Termination Lawyer

  • Verify Their License: Check your state's bar association website to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  • Review Their Experience: Look for lawyers who specialize in employment law and have specific experience with wrongful termination cases.
  • Read Client Reviews: Websites like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google Reviews can provide insights into the lawyer's reputation.
  • Ask for References: Reputable lawyers should be willing to provide references from past clients.
  • Professional Memberships: Membership in organizations like the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) indicates a focus on employment law.
  • Disciplinary Record: Ensure the lawyer has no history of disciplinary actions or complaints.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting:

  • Employment Documents: Bring your employment contract, employee handbook, offer letters, termination letter, and any severance agreements.
  • Performance Records: Include performance reviews, commendations, or any disciplinary actions.
  • Correspondence: Provide emails, texts, or memos related to your termination or any incidents leading up to it.
  • Witness Information: List names and contact information of colleagues who can support your claims.
  • Timeline of Events: Prepare a detailed account of events, including dates and descriptions of incidents.
  • Previous Complaints: If you filed complaints with HR or external agencies, bring copies.
  • Questions: Write down any questions you have about your case or the legal process.

Being well-prepared helps the lawyer assess your situation effectively and advise you on the best course of action.
