Roy explained what was going to happen in our first meeting . I hired him to handle my divorce because he understands the law and precedent and he has confidence to explain how that will shape the case. In my instance he was successful in keeping my interests as the primary goal. He is the only professional I have met in recent years that will actually use his skills to change the evolution of events rather than responding to the other side. When Roy said this is what is going to happen - it did. Thank you Roy!

My decision to retain Roy as counsel was the best decision made for my divorce and custody trials. His knowledge and interpretation of the law coupled with his decisive and calculating courtroom demeanor makes him an outstanding choice when you need someone who has your best interests at hand. He is an honest, no BS professional. Thanks Roy.

I was so grateful to have Roy represent me in connection with a paternity action in 2012. Roy's paralegal Katherine and Attorney Lisa Smith also did an outstanding job helping in my case. We reached a settlement at mediation and he promptly got the child support order entered. Roy was very knowledgeable and compassionate during a very difficult time in my life. I highly recommend Roy Smith.

Best decision I ever made was hiring Mr. Smith to represent me in my custody case. He is the third attorney I have retained for this matter and I can't say enough good things about him. Mr. Smith has accomplished more in my case in 60 days then my previous counsel did in a year. He communicates impressively timely, is extremely knowledgeable, and most importantly fights for his clients. In addition, he is very honest and realistic about the matter at hand. Lastly, his billing practices enable clients to get the best representation without being nicked and dimed to death. Bottom line, if you need an amazing attorney, and you don't hire Mr. Smith, you made a mistake.

Mr.McCulloch is a phenomenal attorney to have. He is known for his extensive knowledge as a criminal trial and appeals lawyer. My family is very fortunate to have found Mark after interviewing many lawyers to find the best of the BEST! It was the greatest and most wise decision we could have ever made. He is highly motivated and extremely talented in his line of work. He has been working extensively on my father’s case and we could not be more pleased with an attorney. He has a broad knowledge of many areas of law and will fight for you like you’re his own family. There is no doubt without Mr.McCulloch’s guidance and representation we would not be where we are at today. Our case is still ongoing but we know that the best possible outcome will be achieved with having Mr.McCulloch as our defense attorney. My family and I cannot thank Mark enough for all his hard work and dedication to our case. He will fight for you deligently in and out of the courtroom. Many lawyers promise results, Mr.McCulloch delivers them and will go above and beyond for you.

I asked for Attorney Brooderson to look into my case and give me guidance on steps moving forward and how I shall proceed. His strategy worked great, and afforded me the outcome that I was looking for. The investigation from the board of health was ceased with no hearing needed. His legal memos to the board were articulate, well-thought out and got the job done. I highly recommend Attorney Brooderson.

Working with Sanchez and Brown was an incredible experience. Both attorneys were so quick to help answer questions about my case while being so kind and understanding. Going through a traumatic experience with a car accident was no easy task however attorney Brown was very patient with me and understanding. My case was settled in a timely manner and I am so happy to have a resolution. Thank you to both attorneys, Marisol and Morgan for all of the help throughout this process. I will absolutely recommend this law firm to anyone I know. 🙂

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Altamonte Springs, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
