Hiring Amy was a godsend! I was arrested for DUI, never thinking I'd be that person who doesn't plan ahead on a night out. I was not only in legal trouble, but I felt deeply ashamed. I was terrified of the consequences at my job. I was at the lowest point in my life. I reached out to Colleen Glenn law firm and met Amy Guin. She immediately took charge of my situation and assured me that although this may feel like the worst thing that has ever happened, everything is going to be okay. She treated me with respect that I did not feel like I deserved. I started to breathe again as she took charge and explained how my charges could be reduced if I followed all of the steps she presented to me. I was 100% committed to doing so. I left her office that day feeling lighter knowing I had her to help me navigate this storm in my life. Each and every time I contacted Amy via email or phone, she responded within a few hours. Amy never left me hanging or feeling alone. I never even had to go to court! She took care of every single legal detail. Yes, she is incredibly brilliant and a compassionate soul who I cannot recommend enough. Hiring Amy was a godsend! I have many friends in the local Sarasota and Bradenton Florida legal communities. When it came time for my wife and I to update our complex estate planning, I first asked my friends for recommendations. The one resounding recommendation was Attorney Todd Kaplan. I was told that he would not only serve my needs, but that he is the area's premier estate planning, probate, trust administration, business and tax attorney. I couldn't agree more, and my wife and I found Todd to be personable, respectful, professional, knowledgeable and that he obviously possesses a solid report in the legal community. Like Todd, his staff is easy to deal with and exemplify excellence. When it came to our disabled child, Todd was not only compassionate, but we were surprised to find that Todd is highly involved in a local charity for people with disabilities. Seeing such a busy attorney giving so much back to the community was very impressive. Likewise, his tax planning for our child's disability and my several businesses is the epitome of a skilled practitioner. After completion of my estate planning, I chose Todd to represent my businesses as well, and he has shown the exact same diligence and high standard that I have become accustomed to. When my mother passed away several months after we discovered Todd, he also represented me as personal representative in the probate of my mother's estate. He has that "x-factor" magnetic personality that makes everyone seem to gravitate toward him. I have dealt with many attorneys in the past, and I realized quickly that Mr. Kaplan is the attorney that I want on my side. For the reader of this review, if you take anything away from what I have written above, it should be that Mr. Kaplan is one of the few well-rounded and highly skilled attorneys that represent what the rest of the legal industry should strive to be.

Todd was reccomended by a neighbor and friend to update my will and trust since it had not been updated since my husband passed away 8 years ago. I had put off making revisions to my will and trust since my husband passed away because my last experience with another local attorney who had drafted our first will and trust (and then handled my husband's estate) was not a positive one. Based on that last experience, I was intimidated to see an attorney by myself but knew that i needed to get this accomplished. When i got to the offices of Icard Merrill in Lakewood Ranch, I was greeted warmly by the receptionist and then by Todd's legal assistant. Mr. Kaplan was on time for the appointment and from the first minute, I was comforted by his demeanor. He took the time to explain the relevant laws, review my documents and make good suggestions that will save my children alot of time and money upon my passing. He provided me with a flat fee quote (and actually charged me a little less than quoted) and my work was completed relatively timely. Overall, I was extremely happy with the and comforted by the experience. If you are like me and heistant to see an attorney, I would not hesitate to suggest and reccomend Todd.

I came to see Todd for issues and advice regarding my company. We have grown substantially over the past few years but did not have all of the necessary documentation to protect myself and my business. I have partners and Todd took the time to explain a number of issues and problems with the current structure. He also had several suggestions to reduce our current tax liability. Todd ultimately drafted a well needed operating/buy-sell agreement that was specific to our business needs. This new operating agreement was far better than the cookie cutter Operating agreement (full of errors) that I got when I set up my company with another local attorney.I also just made an appointment to update mine and my husband's wills and trusts since they have not been looked at in over 10 years. I presume that this experience will be as successful as the first one. I definately recommend Todd to anyone looking for a smart, knowledgeable (and affordable) attorney.

I had the pleasure of working with Lori Dorman at the beginning of 2020. When I met Lori at her office, she was quick to review the documents I brought in, and immediately began making calls. She wasted no time in getting answers and results. She got further in five minutes than I was able to get in five months. She took control of my case, and successfully produced an outcome even I could not have anticipated. I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone. She knows what she's doing!!!

I first met Lori on recommendation from a colleague nearly ten years ago. The circumstances at that time were such that she was unable to assist with my desired outcome of an employment contract situation. However, having already sized up a good sense of her astute knowledge of employment law and empathetic presence, five years later on when I was in a better position to move forward in my career dreams she was the first individual I turned to. She has since provided me and my company with numerous consultations, defense support, and other personal legal services. Lori has always been keenly aware of or quickly done the research to inform herself of the legal statutes, interpretations, and precedents at stake; and if not her area of expertise, made this known and referred me to other highly qualified individuals. Over time we developed a strong mutual respect and have made a number of cross-referrals for our respective areas of expertise. This is one lawyer you would be proud to call yours.

Having risked everything we had to start a company that I was terminated from, I felt that my whole world come crashing down. That was until Lori met with my wife and I and explained that we had a right to what we had sacrificed so much to build... even though we had no written agreement. Three weeks later we regained almost all of what we were due and was able to move on with our lives. With her help we have been able to BENIFIT from what was originally thought to be a life shattering event. Thank you!!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

  9. What challenges do you foresee in my case?
Understanding potential obstacles helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bradenton, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
