For 21 months I did all the work for my son's case. Magann's office simply faxed/mailed everything I had to complete/gather/copy/request. He does not do in-office consults/interviews - so I never met him. Slow to respond to e-mails, phone calls. We terminated his "services" because he accomplished nothing nor did anything for us in 21 months.

I am a veteran and was denied benefits and I needed an attorney for my hearing. Mr. Magann helped me obtain my file, wrote a letter to the Judge, helped me prepare for my testimony and I won after a long wait.

When I contacted Courtney I was a wreck! She came up with a plan and executed it AMAZINGLY! Courtney will never promise you a win but let me tell you she will fight with every ounce in her to defend you and your rights! My case was a complicated one..it was a matter of a family member wanting to take custody of just my daughter. To make things even more difficult the opposing parties kept amending things and moving it to different court rooms to set the date out even further. But courtney was always on top of her game and had not only my best interest at my hand but my daughters. Now I'm reunited with my daughter and there are not enough words to express how thankful I am to have chosen courtney to be my attorney! Courtney Bueno is your lawyer to hire if you are looking for a honest person that will have your best interest at hand. She legitimately cares about her clients and it shows in everything she does! A million thanks Courtney!

If you are looking for a straight forward lawyer that will fight for your best interest within the limits of the law, she is the one for you. I am a down to earth reasonable person, but life happens and I found myself needing a divorce attorney. Courtney came recommended by another attorney. From the moment I meet with her I knew she was my kind of lawyer. Up front, willing to listen but advise within the laws even if not in your favor. I am a let me know type of person there is no grey area for me and she left none. Once she took my case she was always only a call or email away. When in doubt any questions or concerns I had were addressed by her even if not by opposing council. Never a minute of my long over drawn divorce did I feel I was not getting the best defense. I was able to sleep at night knowing that I was in capable hands and that me and my children would get what was right in the eyes of the law and no more. My journey is over, but I will forever be grateful to the peaceful nights I was able to have during what is the most horrible and trying times anyone can go through, thanks to the knowledgeable and experienced job that Cortney Bueno provided me. Kiddos to you and your outstanding serivce!!!! Again hands down one of the most amazing talented professional people you will ever meet. I am glad to have had the pleasure to meet and relate. You have my vote and recommendations through and through. God bless and continue to bless people with your talent.

Consummate professional. Mrs. Bueno provided accurate and timely guidance on a case involving the extension of support for a child past the age of 18 years. During the initial consult she discussed many other options that I did not receive from another, more "experienced" attorney. I decided to seek her counsel at a reasonable hourly rate. She was extremely prompt for all engagements and stands atop of all family law attorneys (across three states) I have dealt with over the past 18 years.

Richard was very personable, informative and invested right from the get-go. He took the time to understand my situation, provide reassurance and was very consistent in keeping me in the loop, as needed. I was on a tight timeline and Richard ensured things were handled right from the beginning. I would recommend Richard with the utmost confidence as I truly had a great experience from start to finish. If ever needed again, I would seek assistance from Richard, without a doubt.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Brandon, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
