I want to start by saying that I fully support law enforcement and personal accountability. However, my youngest son made a foolish decision early this year, and a particularly overzealous police officer not only arrested him but charged him with extreme offenses that were completely inappropriate for the situation. I’m convinced that if it had been the officer’s own son or a family friend, he would have handled it differently—perhaps with a stern warning or, at the very most, a misdemeanor charge. With little time to find the right attorney, we came across Michael Haworth and Hanlon Law online. I can’t thank Michael and Mr. Hanlon enough for their professionalism, dedication, and understanding throughout this ordeal. They not only achieved the best possible outcome for my son but also took the time to listen to my fears, ensuring I always felt heard and supported. I was terrified that my son would get trapped in the system, and I couldn’t eat or sleep. But Michael Haworth, with support from Mr. Hanlon, patiently addressed my concerns, presenting realistic options without making unattainable promises. They were committed to resolving this issue, and they did exactly that. I still believe in “law and order,” but this experience opened my eyes to how one bad apple can tarnish people’s view of law enforcement. This officer seemed determined to ruin my 14-year-old son’s life by pushing for a potential prison sentence when he could have chosen a less severe path to teach him a lesson. He also called multiple times once he had nothing to do with it asking questions that the only motive could be to cause some sort of harm on my child, who is doing great now btw. Without Michael Haworth and Mr. Hanlon, my son might have faced a much harsher outcome. They approached the case with creativity and genuine care, always communicating clearly and making me feel confident in their representation. They are truly experts in juvenile law, and their experience and knowledge made all the difference. Over the years, I’ve worked with many attorneys—both corporate and criminal—through my business and for legal matters involving friends, employees, and family. Most attorneys don’t communicate well or fight as hard as they would for their own family. But Michael Haworth and Mr. Hanlon are different. They provided multiple strategies and thought outside the box to make this situation go away. Very few attorneys have such extensive experience and understanding of the legal system for minors in Florida. One bad cop could have ruined my son’s future, but Michael Haworth and Mr. Hanlon cared enough to craft a thoughtful, personalized approach that worked. They got the job done, plain and simple. If anyone finds themselves, or a loved one—especially a minor—facing legal trouble, I wholeheartedly endorse Michael Haworth and Mr. Hanlon.

Being an attorney myself, I never expected to be caught up in the criminal system. However, due to overzealous law enforcement I found myself charged with a crime I didn’t commit. I quickly realized that I didn’t understand the system, or any of the procedures. I interviewed several attorneys to assist me with my case, but I ultimately picked Hanlon Law. Will Hanlon asked questions and offered solutions that the other attorneys had not. He looked closely at the individuals and personalities involved in the case, not just at the criminal charges. I felt as though he wanted to understand me and how I had come to be sitting in his office. He took the time to carefully explain the procedure to me, without a sugar coating. I was completely prepared for what might or might not follow. Will and his staff worked hard to procure the best possible outcome for me, keeping me fully informed along the way. The goal was achieved, and charges were dropped. There are a lot of things about this incident that I would like to forget, but I won’t forget the way Hanlon Law worked for me. Thank you!

I had a long running - 4 years - problem with a business partner involving intellectual property issues and I consulted Alan about this. He was knowledgeable but it was not his area of expertise so he roped in a colleague who specialized in the area. What impressed me is how Alan shepherded the process and kept it on track. He was always on top of actions that needed to be taken and worked actively to keep the billing hours as low as possible. Eventually the strategy he devised with his partner resolved my issue in ninety days. Subsequently I have retained Alan as my attorney for all my business and personal affairs including wills and estate planning and have been very happy with the service I get. An earlier reviewer reported that Alan did not return phone calls and his staff were discourteous. I cannot believe this because my experience has been the exact opposite. I have frequently received a response from Alan to my emails within seconds. His staff is most courteous and eager to help. On one occasion I pointed out an error to his assistant and she felt so bad that Alan called me to find out exactly what had happened. His staff take pride in work well done and he sets the tone himself. I am not competent to evaluate a lawyer's expertise. But I have been around long enough to judge a professional and I am highly confident that Alan is a super attorney - confident in what he knows in the areas in which he specializes, and well connected enough to assemble a competent legal team for whatever problem you are confronting. On one occasion I had a friend who needed legal help in the not-for-profit arena. Alan gave me a recommendation that my friend was thoroughly happy with. Finally, Alan is an attorney and will bill you for his time. But he has also helped many clients in different ways that go way past legal issues. I have met many of these clients personally and their testimonials are the reason I use him as my own attorney.

Alan Gassman was recomended when my wife and I were looking to update our wills. He worked very closely with us on setting up a trust. This was several years ago. We have continued working with him on updating the trust. Alan and his staff got us through an inheritance situation when a relative died and the original will could not be found. We also used his offices for some insurance problems regarding my wife,s mother. He got results when we were getting nowhere with the insurance company. In all cases we have found that he and his staff have always met or exceeded our expectations. My wife and I would be more than happy to recomend Alan Gassman.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Clearwater, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
