First off, how I got to this page is because I'd just typed 'Eric Barnes Clearwater' as I'm again in need of him and had his number in an old phone. OK, I'd hired Eric because my ex had just packed up and left, ignored my phone calls, and would not let me have ANY communication with My Boys, which's My World and My Everything. She'd done this because apparently 'I worked too much', when I was just trying to do everything possible to ensure a roof was over our head and to make sure My Boys had everything they needed and wanted, and to put away funds for their future (college) cause I knew that Ed McMahon wasn't going to knock on our door and present us with the winning ticket! Unfortunately, long time ago in the 90's I had made bad decisions by hanging around with the wrong people and getting in to to trouble with the law, and she'd felt that because I'd made bad decisions in the past that the judge would automatically rule in her favor and just let her have My Boys, and honestly I'd thought that the judge would see that I used to be a trouble maker and not let me in the picture. Well she and I were definitely WRONG! The judge gave me MY RIGHT TO BE THEIR DAD regardless of my past because my past was just that, my past, and bad decisions in the past before kids DO NOT dictate what kind of Dad or Parent oen will be, and some Dads may dispute this, but I'm the BEST Dad there is! My Boys are My World and My EVERYTHING, and soon after I'd won my time with them to be their Dad, she'd started playing games again, and would not even show up. Eric had pulled her right back in court for contempt. No games, no time wasted, just "OK, Mike, don't worry about it. I can only imagine what you're going through cause I'm a Dad myself, but I promise you I'll call down to the judge's assistant after I hang up with you to get us on the calender and bring her in front of the judge." Anyways, I can go on and on with this and specifics, but honestly don't have the time, but being how I landed on this page accidentally, I thought that I'd just write a quick review on Eric because without him I would've missed years with My Boys, and because of him I'm forever grateful, and I can assure you that My Boys are as well. I'd never missed any time with My Boys, but recently My Dad passed away and there came an exception as I didn't want My Boys to see me in the emotional state that I was, and to give you an idea of the impact that I have on My Boys, I was told by them, "Daddy, we cried when mommy said you weren't going to get us" and without Eric that would've never been said because I would not've been entitled to My Boys cause the Court System here in Florida is completely messed up and automatically favors the mom, regardless of who's the better parent, so it's on us Dad'd to bring them in to court and point out why that's an absolute ridiculous outlook, and being how I've been there, done that, and am doing it again, I'd strongly recommend Eric cause he does what he says without nickling and diming you, and helps ease your mind through the process.

I have retained Eric twice and both times Eric was professional, responsive, and reasonable. As far as the last poster suggesting that he is not aggressive, I disagree, Eric is appropriately aggressive when necessary without alienating the other party in order to get the most out of a negotiation. Bottom line, he got results and charged appropriately. I would highly recommend.

Eric was rarely prepared when going to Court. Because I relyed on his "expertise", I am paying $400 more per month in alimony than he said I would. He left me hanging in the 11th hour of mediation. He is nice, but not aggressive so the end result is unfavorable. He no longer is associated with David Sharpe on Sunset Point Rd. in Clearwater.

I had a long running - 4 years - problem with a business partner involving intellectual property issues and I consulted Alan about this. He was knowledgeable but it was not his area of expertise so he roped in a colleague who specialized in the area. What impressed me is how Alan shepherded the process and kept it on track. He was always on top of actions that needed to be taken and worked actively to keep the billing hours as low as possible. Eventually the strategy he devised with his partner resolved my issue in ninety days. Subsequently I have retained Alan as my attorney for all my business and personal affairs including wills and estate planning and have been very happy with the service I get. An earlier reviewer reported that Alan did not return phone calls and his staff were discourteous. I cannot believe this because my experience has been the exact opposite. I have frequently received a response from Alan to my emails within seconds. His staff is most courteous and eager to help. On one occasion I pointed out an error to his assistant and she felt so bad that Alan called me to find out exactly what had happened. His staff take pride in work well done and he sets the tone himself. I am not competent to evaluate a lawyer's expertise. But I have been around long enough to judge a professional and I am highly confident that Alan is a super attorney - confident in what he knows in the areas in which he specializes, and well connected enough to assemble a competent legal team for whatever problem you are confronting. On one occasion I had a friend who needed legal help in the not-for-profit arena. Alan gave me a recommendation that my friend was thoroughly happy with. Finally, Alan is an attorney and will bill you for his time. But he has also helped many clients in different ways that go way past legal issues. I have met many of these clients personally and their testimonials are the reason I use him as my own attorney.

Alan Gassman was recomended when my wife and I were looking to update our wills. He worked very closely with us on setting up a trust. This was several years ago. We have continued working with him on updating the trust. Alan and his staff got us through an inheritance situation when a relative died and the original will could not be found. We also used his offices for some insurance problems regarding my wife,s mother. He got results when we were getting nowhere with the insurance company. In all cases we have found that he and his staff have always met or exceeded our expectations. My wife and I would be more than happy to recomend Alan Gassman.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Clearwater, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
