Three years ago, my boyfriend and I came to spellman as a client. All of the other attorneys here in Fort Myers were very pricey. My boyfriend asked Attorney Spellman if he was interested in assisting on fighting the justice system for the wrongful charge. He accepted the case for a portion of what other lawyers had asked for. From day one he was on top of his "A" game. He kept us informed at all times. He was very transparent and diligent in my case. He went above and beyond. Never ceasing to amaze us. He is a very dedicated lawyer and very passionate about legal representation, all the while supporting me and my family, he always went above and beyond. He has a great mentality and was extremely thorough. He is fair and adamant about what he believes in an fights for. He fought for my boyfriend until the end and beyond in his high profile court case. He fought for my boyfriend's life separately and together with us. I wouldn't have had it any other way. He will continue to do great things. He is amazing at what he does. I am so grateful that he was the lawyer that had our back in the fight for life against an unjust justice system. I highly recommend Spellman if you are looking for standup representation and if you have found yourself facing a false accusation. We will forever be eternally grateful. Thank you for your dedication and ALL of your hard work through your persistence and dedication pertaining to our case.

We could not have asked for a better attorney than Jon Spellman to represent our son. I believe Jon went above and beyond for us. He kept us informed every step of the way and made us feel at ease . We were so happy with the outcome of our sons case and can never thank him enough for all he did. I would highly recommend Jon to anyone that needs legal representation.

I have known Jonathan for 6 years now not only as former co-worker but also a dear friend. As a seasoned lawyer, he jumped right in and second chaired a felony case with me. The most valuable thing that I learned from him was to have fun and do my very best in trials despite the oppositions that arise. I wouldn't had made it through that trial without him. He has also represented my family and I on several personal injury cases. Jonathan is full of integrity and handles everyone in the most respectful, professional way. I call him for everything and if you are in need of an attorney whether civil or criminal, he is definitely the one to call. If you are looking for honesty and to be handled with the best care, you will NEVER regret hiring him. He is the GOAT!

Jonathan M. Spellman is the true definition an attorney who will fight for you. He went above and beyond for me and my daughter. He renegotiated an additional reimbursement of my total loss vehicle after receiving the initial payout. His work ethic is 2nd to none!

John is an expert in wealth transfer planning and the use of sophisticated life insurance strategies. While working directly with several life insurance companies, my legal counsel made inquiries as to Attorney Iannucci's experience and expertise. Every company had the same opinion of John and I concur. He was detailed oriented, explained every facet of the proposed plan and answered our questions honestly and openly.

If I could give Robert Foley and Desiree Wilson 10 stars I would do so gladly. I had a situation that required their expertise and from the very beginning I was very impressed. Robert and Desiree asked me to come in person and took the time to explain the entire process from beginning to end. The initial meeting was well over an hour. I'll never forget that. Most attorneys wouldn't go out of their way like that. I had the benefit of having 2 outstanding lawyers for the price of one. Thanks to Robert and Desiree my case was dismissed and I was able to start to get my life back together. To say that I highly recommend them is a under statement. If ever in the future I should need their expertise I would retain them both in a heartbeat.

Very much the professional, Attorney Cruz, put me at ease the moment I walked into his office. As most people feel when they turn to an attorney to perform a task that we cannot do ourselves, I was completely defeated and had no idea of the types of documentation needed. Step by step, he led me through a rather difficult task and gave me the confidence I needed to complete all of the paperwork. He stayed "connected" and in less than 3 weeks the entire process was completed. In spite of the complete professional approach, I know he is a compassionate individual who intended to provide me with peace of mind. He listens!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fort Myers, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
