Prior to hiring Mike he was super “nice” I guess you could say. I didn’t like that he “kept calling me “bro,” but perhaps that’s what he does to try to lure people. But after he took my $5,000 his demeanor changed immediately. I had sent a lengthy email detailing everything and he didn’t like it. We got into a conversation and he told me to send him everything in detail, which I had just done. I was like “Mike, I sent you everything I know!” Then he began to yell and curse at me. I couldn’t believe it, having paid that money to get screamed and yelled at. What a slap in the face. I was completely humiliated. $5,000 and he couldn’t just read the email and take notes then move ahead accordingly. That says to me that he just did not want to take the time to read it to fully understand the situation. I’m beyond humiliated, beyond appalled that someone would take $5,000 to treat me that way. There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of behavior. Seek council elsewhere.

My divorce case is legendary. He awarded my ex-wife about $17,000 a month knowing full well I didnt make half that. They threaten me with jail time on three separate occasions for being more than five days late on my many thousands of dollars of temporary support. worst and most unforgivable he single-handedly destroyed my relationship with three beautiful little girls that were my daughters. 15 years later I have almost no contact although they seem to be doing OK. My case went to the Supreme Court and I won. But some costs are simply not recoverable. Every couple of years I look him up just to see if he's dead. I've never written anything about him before.

Too bad we can't give negative stars, or a brown, twisty emoji to represent this lawyer's poor representation. Chionopoulos focused on making money off a divorce rather than the safety and well being of children who are being abused by a parent. He completely disregarding constant pleas to involve a guardian-ad-litem for the children and soaked up what meager funds we'd escaped with. He then dropped us on our heads, with no representation to guide us through a critical situation. Prior to his last court appearance on my behalf, I spent two hours in his office hearing him yell at people about his boat in the other office. He spent maybe 10-15 minutes in the room preparing for proceedings before it was time to leave for court, and that was spent eating lunch, and staying attuned to his texts, and running off again to take a call about his boat. During the proceedings, he was on his cell phone texting, regarding his boat. At one point, the Judge had to call out to him three times, and I had to elbow him in the arm to get him to respond. Our abuser found that entirely entertaining, which he continues to share with our children to this day. We are three years into this now, just beginning to have hope we can finally properly represent the truth. Chionopoulos just went off into the sunset on his big boat...

Having consulted with attorney's previously, I can attest that Mr. Chionopoulos is one of the premier attorneys in Southwest Florida. He is one of the few attorneys in the area who can handle a variety of cases -- from a criminal case to complex business litigation case to a family law case. The breadth and depth of his legal knowledge -- as evidenced by his weekly appearance on the Stan and Haney show -- is AMAZING. He comes highly recommended.

John is an expert in wealth transfer planning and the use of sophisticated life insurance strategies. While working directly with several life insurance companies, my legal counsel made inquiries as to Attorney Iannucci's experience and expertise. Every company had the same opinion of John and I concur. He was detailed oriented, explained every facet of the proposed plan and answered our questions honestly and openly.

If I could give Robert Foley and Desiree Wilson 10 stars I would do so gladly. I had a situation that required their expertise and from the very beginning I was very impressed. Robert and Desiree asked me to come in person and took the time to explain the entire process from beginning to end. The initial meeting was well over an hour. I'll never forget that. Most attorneys wouldn't go out of their way like that. I had the benefit of having 2 outstanding lawyers for the price of one. Thanks to Robert and Desiree my case was dismissed and I was able to start to get my life back together. To say that I highly recommend them is a under statement. If ever in the future I should need their expertise I would retain them both in a heartbeat.

Very much the professional, Attorney Cruz, put me at ease the moment I walked into his office. As most people feel when they turn to an attorney to perform a task that we cannot do ourselves, I was completely defeated and had no idea of the types of documentation needed. Step by step, he led me through a rather difficult task and gave me the confidence I needed to complete all of the paperwork. He stayed "connected" and in less than 3 weeks the entire process was completed. In spite of the complete professional approach, I know he is a compassionate individual who intended to provide me with peace of mind. He listens!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fort Myers, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
