When I was refinancing my house and found out that because Mom and I purchased the house jointly then I had to file a probate. I looked up some numbers online, made some calls and after I stated my case, the legal aide gave me the number for 2 quick probate attorneys. I am so glad that the first number I called was Dawn and believe me I have not looked back or tried to call the 2nd number. Dawn was very professional and told me what to do and what her fees were. The process was so easy and it took less that 2 months to get the probate taken care of. Dawn thank you so much and I am much grateful for what you have done. You are very professional and you bet if asked, your name and contact information is already in my phone and I will be happy to pass it on to any person who wished to use your services.

When my Aunt died in 2013, I had no idea it would take until 2018 to unravel the complexities of her estate, as a non-USA citizen living in Europe. As Dawn helped us with one issue, another unexpected element would crop up, creating yet more and more paperwork for both Dawn and us to go through. Throughout this period Dawn was clear in what we needed to do next, supported us far beyond her mandate, and as the months rolled into years , was as supportive as any Attorney could be. From her first response to our initial request for help, to following through to completion of the Probate for my Aunt, she could not have been more supportive and professional. She was patient to the extreme , answering every tiny question and query we had in a professional and just as importantly quickly, and truly helped us navigate the USA Probate system as a non resident alien living thousands of miles away ! I simply cannot praise her work ethos enough & for the ongoing high level of constant support she gave us over these recent years. I sincerely believe she must be among st the most sincere, hard working & genuine professional Attorneys in Florida if not the whole of the USA, and we were very lucky to have her support. I am very grateful for the previous reviews, others had put on this site, that gave us confidence to approach her as our Attorney . As you can imagine living so far away & dealing with a Probate as a non resident and non USA citizen was extremely daunting with the complex issues our individual Probate case raised. So without hesitation, I can recommend Dawn to anyone who needs her Professional help, support and guidance, as we did - she will stand steadfast to help you throughout the whole process and create calm in rough waters and light at the end of what at times ,may feel like a dark tunnel. I feel very privileged and lucky to have had her as our Attorney. Thank you Dawn for all your hard work.

I hired Dawn Ellis to settle my Mother's estate. She quickly and thoroughly answered all my questions and her fees were very reasonable. Her response time was great and the estate was settled in much less time than I had anticipated. I wish I could give her more than 5 stars as I feel her service was that good. I would highly recommend Dawn at My Florida Probate for your probate needs.

Dawn Ellis had a very reasonable flat rate to do the probate for my deceased sister - my sister had a very small estate and it didn't make financial sense to hire an attorney at an hourly rate, especially since the ones we talked with were unwilling to share what general price range it would end up being at an hourly rate. An attorney friend of a friend recommended hiring someone with a flat rate, from the Bar Association website, and Dawn's name was among those on his list. Dawn always responded promptly to my emails, she was very professional, efficient, courteous and friendly. She walked me through exactly what I needed to do as the administrator. I live across the country, and my mother, the heir of the estate, lives abroad, so we never got to meet Dawn in person, and it never was a problem, we did not have to. I am very grateful that she is such a good conscientious and honest attorney - it could have been really rough if I had gone with someone who turned out to be less responsive and thorough. Dawn made the process of filing all the paperwork and closing the estate as painless as it could possibly be in the circumstances. She never added any stress to the process, she only took a lot of potential stress away that we might have had if we had gone with someone else who charged an hourly rate or was less responsive. In the end we even got a small check back for the unused costs advance check we sent her, she was pretty much right on the mark of what the expenses would be. I would very highly recommend her, Dawn Ellis was of tremendous value, both financially and emotionally.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Inverness, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
