My company was downsizing and as a senior employee at retirement age, I lost my job. Knowing that I could not continue paying the high-cost permanent alimony that the court ordered years ago, I needed help. Remembering that a friend highly recommended Attorney Bill Dorsey, I scheduled a consultation. There was a fee, but it was worth it because “you get what you pay for”. I hired Bill and I am extremely fortunate that I did. He led throughout the entire process, and was assisted by team members Sue and Erica. When you hire The Dorsey Law Firm, they are genuinely interested in your case and are extremely helpful. Requests were promptly managed, and the team ALWAYS kept me informed on the status of current proceedings or actions. Impressive! At Mediation, a remarkably successful resolution was reached. I could not be happier! Bill Dorsey is Outstanding! YOU NEED his subject knowledge and strategic recommendations. If you want the best outcome for any court issue, call Bill Dorsey.

Mr Dorsey and his team helped dig me out of the messy trench my last 2 lawyers had left me in. I can’t begin to explain how bad my first few lawyers had screwed up my case and made me look bad against an abusive drug addict narcissist who could charm the pant suit off Hilary Clinton. Mr Dorsey took on my case and for the first time I actually felt like I could trust my lawyer. Unlike my last attorney who charged me an insane amount of money to screw me over, Mr Dorsey gave me a free consultation and always charged me honestly and fairly. He gave me his personal cell number for emergencies and him and his team were always very responsive to my calls and emails. He fought tooth and nail against one of the most dishonest and corrupt opposing councils I have ever seen! He is well known and honored around Jacksonville and St Augustine by many other esteemed lawyers and judges. If you are in need of a good, honest attorney who will fight for you as if you were his own family, you need to hire Bill Dorsey and his team. He is tough and does not give up. Believe me, I probably had the largest case file he had ever taken on in a civil case and he took the time to go over all of it so he didn’t miss a thing. He is stern but honest so listen to his advice because he knows what he is talking about. I can only say that about 1 other lawyer and I have met way more than I ever wanted to. If you are like me and can’t trust your lawyer and have been paying someone and trusting them with your life but all they seem to do is ignore you and take your money: HIRE BILL DORSEY and he will help you get your life (your child/children) back!

No one really wants to go through any family/custody battles. So when I was faced with this issues I had no choice but to retain an attorney. After numerous hours/days of research I found the Dorsey Law Firm. I came to Mr. Dorsey with a lot of uncertainty with my impending custody case. During my consultation Mr. Dorsey was fully tuned in and very attentive. He answered every question I had very confidently. After I retained Mr. Dorsey, his team and himself started working on the case promptly. They filed an emergency motion and was able to get a hearing for temporary custody within a few weeks. I was granted temporary custody until the outcome of the final hearing. In Preparation for the final hearing Mr. Dorsey and the team were with me every step of the way. They reassured me of the potential outcome, instilled confidence in myself and the direction of the case. During the final hearing Mr. Dorsey was very thorough, firm, and fully prepared. His cross examination skills, rebuttals, presentation, and delivery was superb. As a result, I was grant 75% percent of time sharing. I have never felt better and once again I was stress free. Mr. Dorsey is Very professional and has many years of experience with a great rapport with the judges, prosecutors and other attorneys. He’s very firm, straightforward, and passionate about his work and clients. He is well known and well respected amongst his peers. His resume speaks for itself. A big shout out to The Dorsey team. Susan and Heather. They are very hard working, detail oriented, & very professional. They truly care about people. Stop shopping for attorneys based on price. Mr. Dorsey is the Best Bang for The Buck. He is my guy!!!!!!

Perhaps the thing that impressed me most about Bill Dorsey was nothing was "sugar coated". During my Divorce, he was very straight forward and told me what to expect each step of the way. Bill and team Dorsey kept me informed of what my options and risks were. There were no empty promises made, only trustworthy knowledge provided. His guidance never led me astray, and I was extremely happy with the end result. My divorce covered complex matters that Bill and team tackled head on. During such a difficult time in my life, it was a pleasure working with the Dorsey Firm.

I incorrectly posted a negative review for this lawyer, which I am hoping will be removed shortly. John has a heart and goes out of his way to make the client feel important and defended. I would recommend him to everyone. Thank you John - you are a lawyer I can trust.

I came to John Phillips office with little or no hope that I could prove my innocence or survive the alligations against me, I didn't think I would survive emotionally what myself and family were being put through. John along with Reid Hart listen to my story, they explained to me what they could do help me,and how they would go about helping me.My family and I felt so much better about my case and my chances of clearing my name after my conversation with John Phillips, and Ried Hart. I don't know if I would have ever gotten through this ordeal if a friend hadn't suggested that I go speak with John. Every motion they file every question they ask is all tied into getting to the truth, and giving you the best chance of victory I will never use another Law Firm other John Phillips Law firm for anything legal that might come up on my life again. Law firms like John Phillips and Lawyers like Reid Hart don't come like grapes in Bunches.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Jacksonville, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
