I was arrested in March for DUI on a bicycle, Battery against a Law Enforcement Officer x 2, Resisting arrest with violence, Disorderly Intoxication, and some other charges added on to that. I was abusing alcohol to cope with personal issues and landed myself in serious trouble. I was pulled over initially for not having a bike light and acted like an animal with the police. I hired a Criminal Defense Lawyer in Jacksonville and was instructed to complete 50 hours of community service, court approved counseling, get character reference letters, go to DUI school, take the Victim Impact Panel with MADD, and write an apology letter. I was also released on ROR with a SCRAM ankle monitor for measuring alcohol, which I paid for weekly. Communication was limited with my initial attorney and I attributed it a lot to COVID-19, he wasn't working at his office etc. But the communication never picked up. Months passed, and everytime I would talk with his assistant she would just assure me that he is just "waiting on the prosecutor to get back to him" or "waiting on the Discovery". In November, almost 8 months after my arrest, I had a virtual court appearance with my then attorney. The judge was so perplexed as to why this was taking so long. My attorney at the time appeared disorganized and said he had just received my Discovery. After the virtual meeting he called me and said the state had offered me a deal of pleading guilty to DUI and everything else would be dropped. I said "How can you offer me this when you have not even reviewed my Discovery and said that there was still video evidence to be ordered that you have not even seen!" I hung up the phone and started to cry. I was angry and told my family that I am firing my lawyer and hiring a new one. This time, I did my research. I found Tori and felt pretty confident in giving her a call. This was the best decision I could have made. Immediately she answered the phone herself and consulted with me right then and there. She agreed to take on my case that day and the next day we met in person to go over everything (safely, masks worn of course). In 5 weeks she did what my lawyer couldn't have and never even would have accomplished in 8 months. She negotiated with the state and defended me and showed them the efforts that I have been making to better my life and abstain from alcohol. Last Thursday I had my case and I was charged with Disorderly Intoxication and Resisting Arrest. 6 months probation and 2 AA classes a week. No DUI. No Felonies. No year long probation. I could not believe it. The outcome was better than I ever would have imagined. Also that same day she got the court order to finally have my ankle SCRAM removed. I no longer have to pay $86/ week and do not have to hide my ankle anymore. She changed the course of my life. This could have been on my record for the rest of my life, my living options and career choices could have been negatively affected forever. I am so grateful for her representation. I highly recommend you seek her counsel for your criminal or civil case. She is educated, professional and experienced in the NE Florida legal world. Look no further- Tori will defend you to the best of her ability. Thank you so much.

I had 10 years of probation to do and was very doubtful that I could get off early because of a sex charge. After looking at everything, Tori knew that I had done everything right, that I was a very different person, and that if anyone had a chance at early termination it would be me. She had me get all the character references, documents on what I had done since being on probation, and proof that I was a different person. She walked me through the process and got it done!! She kept me updated on timeframes, the status of what was happening, and she was ALWAYS on my side. Thank you, Tori!!

I hired Tori Mussallem on many occasions for various needs regarding my son. On each and every occasion she delivered excellent service, no matter how complicated the situation . I live far from Florida, but she communicated with me as if I were next door, every message I left with her secretary was delivered and answered in a most timely manner. Courteous, compassionate, and highly professional, she resolved all our issues. I cannot commend/recommend her highly enough, far beyond 5 stars!

I decided to hire Tori when my daughter was facing a third degree felony charge for something that was totally blown out of proportion. From the first phone conversation I knew I had made the right choice. Tori is confident and meticulous at what she does. She was always available to answer questions and ease my worries. In less than two weeks, all of the charges were dropped! Thank you Tori!

I incorrectly posted a negative review for this lawyer, which I am hoping will be removed shortly. John has a heart and goes out of his way to make the client feel important and defended. I would recommend him to everyone. Thank you John - you are a lawyer I can trust.

I came to John Phillips office with little or no hope that I could prove my innocence or survive the alligations against me, I didn't think I would survive emotionally what myself and family were being put through. John along with Reid Hart listen to my story, they explained to me what they could do help me,and how they would go about helping me.My family and I felt so much better about my case and my chances of clearing my name after my conversation with John Phillips, and Ried Hart. I don't know if I would have ever gotten through this ordeal if a friend hadn't suggested that I go speak with John. Every motion they file every question they ask is all tied into getting to the truth, and giving you the best chance of victory I will never use another Law Firm other John Phillips Law firm for anything legal that might come up on my life again. Law firms like John Phillips and Lawyers like Reid Hart don't come like grapes in Bunches.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Jacksonville, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
