I absolutely concur with the other previous reviews that recommended and recognized Mr. Wunsch as an excellent choice for criminal defense in the Key West area. I will save you the time and effort of looking for a compassionate, highly capable, responsive, and affordable local attorney in Key West, the choice is simple, Richard E. Wunsch. I recently found myself in an unfortunate situation while visiting Key West. After researching and contacting several local attorneys in the Key West area, I decided to choose and retain Mr. Wunsch for legal representation. Without a doubt, it was the best decision I made regarding this entire predicament. Based on the details of my situation, Mr. Wunsch provided the fairest cost of representation of all the local attorneys I spoke to. He was extremely knowledgeable, empathetic, and responsive during the entire process. I could not have hoped or asked for a better resolution than the one Mr. Wunsch was able to attain. Mr. Wunsch resolved this difficult situation expeditiously and expertly. Thank you Mr. Wunsch for being an amazing attorney and an even better person.

I was arrested on a Felony Battery charge while on vacationing in Key West. I’ve never had to hire a lawyer before, but after a quick search, Google produced a few names. I ended up contacting Richard Wunsch’s office Saturday night. By Sunday morning, His office contacted me and eventually put me in contact with Richard. I then hired Richard and he got to work right away. It did take some time to get things moving because from what I have learned, criminal cases seem to take their time. Once we received the video of the incident from the state, I spoke with Richard and we decided to file a motion for a Stand your Ground hearing would be the best. We filed that motion and with Richard’s court room experience and expertise, we were able to win that motion and have my case dismissed due to my actions being justified. I highly recommend Richard for any criminal case(s) you may find yourself in. Especially if your case has “Stand your Ground” possibility.

Evan was our attorney during my husbands immigration process. Not only did he answer our questions promptly, his knowledge of the process was on point. Any time we needed to call or ask a question he was available. Immigration can and was stressful at times and he was always there to comfort us and reassure us. I cannot recommend him more. He was fantastic.

I have retained Richard's services as a buyer and seller in multiple transactions in both residential and commercial real estate transactions. He has always, without exception, exhibited a full depth of knowledge in the field as well as excellent communication skills. He has worked diligently to get the job(s) done, calmly and thoroughly and with great attention to the details as well. I have always been fully satisfied with his services and can confidently recommend Richard Klitenick.

I am a home owner dealing with eviction of a friend- after calling every lawyer in KW, David Van Loon took time to give me more information than KWPD, MCSO and Clerk of Courts combined. I’ve already referred him x2 and will continue to do so. Thank you for your time and knowledge.

Yanae Barroso Law. This lawyer will not only fight for you, guide you, support you through one of the most difficult times in your life, but also I believe that you will nit regret nor imagine anyone else standing by you the way she did for me. If you have children she will fight for the best Interest of your child. She is brilliantly educated in family law. I was astounded. Divorce is not an easy process in fact a very difficult time that can seem like a roller coaster. She made my ride much lighter. Have faith in her and let her guide you, let her fight for you, let her do her work because this lawyer is one indescribable human that not only my fights but uses her heart. And that is a rarity. Choose Barroso Law.

We inherited a property in the Keys. We live out of state and knew there were Florida state and Keys idiosyncrasies in property transfer and ownership. Bobby was able to answer all our questions in great detail. He also pointed a big issue we weren't even aware of and that could have caused us enormous problems if not addressed. We were very impressed and plan to use him for our future FL legal needs. Get a Keys-based lawyer if you have a Keys property!

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Key West, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
