Mrs. Cheatwood helped me get a settlement out of a car accident. I spent very little time with her, but it paid off well! She is very friendly and got me the most money out of the situation. I would gladly recommend her

You know I had to actually laugh when I read the latest AVVO rating on this woman, apparently written by a "disgrunted" "CHRONIC" complainer, who from the words written speak for themselves. I would put money on this that it was written by a grown man who holds himself out to be "greater" than now. I also know this lady and have known her for many years. She does have a very small office, and yes, her paralegal does share office space with her. And I do believe that I have even seen a file on the floor, perhaps more than once. But when you need something or an attorney to be standing beside you, you can bet your last dollar that GAIL R. CHEATWOOD will be there. I have seen this in the past also. As my mother always said, if you can't say something nice, then "shut up". Look in the mirror and take heed. Ms. Cheatwood has a lot of people who care about her and I do mean a lot. She surely deserves a better rating that what she has, but you know what? I am sure that she won't lose any sleep over this one. Good try though!!! Better luck next time!!

I had a criminal case which I was not guilty of to begin with. I had several free visits with two other attorneys before visiting Ms. Cheatwood's office. I was very satisfied with her mannerism, her knowledge and her frankness regarding my situation. Talk about telling it like it is. She did. She did not try to reel me in like the others that I had seen previously and that meant a lot to me when it came time to make my decision on who I would hire to represent me. Ms. Cheatwood asked me who I had spoken to before and when I told her, she commented that they were both competent and well respected attorneys. This impressed me more than the initial consultation. I was also shocked at her fee, in that I was expecting to be handing out much more than I actually did. She does work with her clients and arranges a payment plan for you. She won my case and I just want to return the favor and tell everyone who reads this, that this should be the attorney for you.

Ms. Cheatwood represented me in a criminal case. I called for an appointment and was quite shocked by the retainer that she quoted me. I had already called other attorneys in Lakeland and they all wanted thousands of dollars and they wanted it up front before they filed one document on my behalf. Ms. Cheatwood explained to me that she tries to charge by the case and she works with the normal every day working people. She understands that not everyone has money stashed away for an attorney. She took my case for less than half of what the others were wanting and even let me make payments. She trusted me, therefore, I will surely pass her name around as being truthful, honest and a hard working attorney. She worked my case and I only had to go to Court one time so I did not have to miss work. I knew what was going to happen prior to my going to Court and when I walked in the Courtroom, it was done and overwith in a matter of a few minutes. I was not nervous or scared, as I had been previously. She is an awesome woman and I recommend her to any person who needs an attorney for a criminal case. She works for you, the client. Thanks Ms. Cheatwood for helping me when no one else would. I guess that is where the saying comes in, Money Talks!!! Not in all situations. God Bless!!

I retained Ms. Cheatwood for a personal injury case. I have previously used a few other attorneys in the Polk County area during my lifetime and they have not come close to the satisfaction that I received from Ms. Cheatwood's office. She never seemed to be too busy for me and I always received a call back, whether it be after hours or not. She made sure to keep in constant contact with me and never made a decision without first consulting me. I would recommend her to anyone who needs a personal injury attorney. Although she does not come from a large firm, she is the lady for me. She is real, personable and always there when I had a question. If she did not know the answer, she would find it out. I strongly recommend her to anyone who needs their case taken care of professionally, quickly and correctly.

Ms. Feldman took the time to meet with me and discuss every aspect of my case. When she realized she couldn't help me with all of the legal problems I came to her for, she then utilized her time to find another lawyer for me. Although the other lawyer could have handled everything, I left the cases she could do with her, and I am so glad I did. She is an excellent and ethical attorney. I will go to her first for any future issues.

Ms. Feldman handled my case with the utmost professionalism. Not only did she protect our interest as if it were her own, but was also extremely compassionate to what we were going through. I would also say that her honesty and integrity is like nothing I've seen in the business world. I would recommend Ms Feldman to anyone who wants someone who will fight for their interest and take it to heart.

Barbi is amazing, very caring lawyer, she cares about getting to the truth of what really happened. She did my case pro-bono, but worked on it like she was making a million dollars. Thank you so much Barbi!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lakeland, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
