Cons
1
Potential issues with follow-up and attention to detail, leading to additional charges for clients
“I called around to get my grandmother's trust looked at and updated. My first experience with Danielle was amazing, she listened, offered an appointment time that fit our schedule and followed up with a reminder call. We met with Cassidy Peterson and she was fantastic! My 98 yr. old grandmother was impressed with her knowledge and her demeanor. After we left our initial consultation my grandmother made it very clear she would only use Ms. Peterson. I was so impressed with all she did, I recommended her to my mother-in-law and she used her as well. This is the firm you want to represent you and your family!”
2
Occasional instances of poor communication or lack of guidance, leading to unsatisfactory experiences
“We paid $150 for a 30 minute consultation with Cassidy. She didn't have a clue how to help us and spent most of the time we were there on the phone with a funeral home director getting information regarding the law related to our issue. We left having received no help.”

My wife and I had been putting off getting a will for many years. We envisioned stuffy formal offices manned with gruff, cigar comping, self important lawyers in Italian suits and Rolexes! We were also worried if we could afford it. My wife read about an Elder Law office in our town and was impressed with their commitment to family legal matters. We decided to make an appointment. From the minute we walked into Estate Planning & Elder Law Center of Brevard we felt welcome. The surroundings were cozy and professional. We were immediately greeted and offered coffee and water. Our initial consultation was informative, thorough, and congenial. The attorneys Robin and Roger are exemplary executives, and along with Erica, Jennifer, and Danielle, Elder Law Center is in excellent, capable hands. We now have a gorgeous binder complete with our will, living trust, and all the trimmings. In many ways we feel this is one of the best investments we've ever made.We extend our praise and deep thanks to Elder Law Center of Brevard. Highly Recommended! My mother went in to make a few amendments to the existing documents Elder Law Center had drawn up a few years ago. Robin Petersen Esq. was efficient and detail oriented. My mom was supposed to come back a few weeks later to sign the documents. Two days later the office informed her that her documents were ready for review. The office staff was able to make time for her to come in immediately to sign. This was a huge relief to have everything done so quickly. Erica and the rest of the office staff were so incredibly sweet to my mother. Erica made sure to go over everything carefully so that my mother understood everything. Erica even spoke to my mother in Spanish to make the process even easier for her to understand. I would 100% recommend their services to anyone in need of estate planning.

Mr. Hamilton took my case after a driver ran a stop sign and t-boned me at high speed. I could not be happier with the entire process. They took care of all medical billing issues during the entire case and was able to get a very good sized payout after everything was taken care of. It is absolutely mandatory you have a great lawyer through a process like this and I found out I had the best one. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Hamilton at the Nance Cacciatore lawfirm.

Ed is a remarkable attorney. He has been my construction litigation attorney since 2002. He is very cordial and professional, but when he represents you, he can be a beast with your opponent. He builds the case from information he and his staff glean from you, they do the case law studies, and when he deposes and tries cases, he gets to the truth. I am proud to be associated with Ed and to have him on my side.

Mr. Bowin and his team were a complete pleasure to deal with during a long and difficult time. I am also an attorney and followed his work very closely. He did an excellent job on his brief and an amazing job at the oral argument! Obviously he was victorious and I cannot recommend him and his office enough!

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Melbourne, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
