Phillip handled my criminal case for DUI. This isn’t the law he most often practices but he did everything to educate himself. He was always honest, upfront and nonjudgmental. He believed in me, he was genuine and finally we won. NOT GUILTY! But in case you find yourself in my shoes uneducated on any sort of criminal or legal process, the following is a little more detailed. To begin, I called him just a half hour after being released from jail. My job involves driving so you can imagine the distress I was in about my license… Within the hour he was able to gather all the documents necessary as well as instruction for my completion of them in order to begin the hardship process and keep my right to drive for work. My case went eight months before being set for trial. During the eight months Phillip was always a text message or phone call away. He never went more than an hour without responding, which in this situation was extremely comforting because I had no priors and was extremely unfamiliar with this process. No matter how many questions I had or how many times he had to repeat himself, he always did so in a respectful and informative manner. Finally, looking back now when it came to trial he was very strategic and smart about how and when to explain things to me. While being very honest, he simultaneously put me at ease and gave me hope. I knew he believed and wanted the NOT GUILTY just as badly as I needed it. I never shared this with him, but in those eight months I spoke with many lawyers over the phone about my case and possible consultation. I was always unsure of whether I had made the right decision going to a lawyer that didn’t specialize in DUI like everyone strongly suggests. But not one of them were as authentic as Phillip truly is, which is why I never met with any of them. I would argue that authenticity and trust are perhaps the most important characteristics anyone should want in a lawyer. Phillip changed my life. I would have been fired and all of the money I have invested in school would have been nothing more but a debt waiting to be collected. I highly recommend him for representation.

I don't know how we can thank Phillip Ortiz for everything he did for my family and I after the death of my Mother. He helped us navigate the settling of her estate and his ability to explain the process so well put us all at ease. Every challenge and issue that popped up along the way he met head on and resolved. He always treated us with respect and responded quickly to all our questions and concerns. I would highly recommend Mr. Ortiz and wish him the best in his career.

Philip and his firm went above and beyond what seems to be the standards for most law offices in "todays" world. The Firm Law groups knowledge and insight, attention to detail, accessibility and communication earn these guys a very positive 5 star review and more importantly one very happy client whom actually had a positive experience when dealing with legal matters. I would highly recommend these guys!

I contacted Mr. Ortiz to handle a withheld security deposit matter. He was extremely informative and made me feel very confident with my case. He was quick to get the defendant served and case settled despite the busy Holiday Season and made sure to keep me informed every step of the way. I am very satisfied with his services and will certainly use him again if needed and will not hesitate to pass along as a referall. Thanks again and again!!!

I have had the opportunity and pleasure of working with Mr. Ortiz on a number of pre-suit and post-suit matters. Mr. Ortiz is extremely effective in both respects. He truly understands how to evaluate a case and provide the client with a truthful assessment of their case. Such is an invaluable tool in this profession. Moreover, Mr. Ortiz's courtroom experience and demeanor should put any client at ease if they must proceed with litigation.

Melissa, like an angel, was soft and compassionate towards me as she learned my past to proceed with a difficult domestic violence situation. She was extremely efficient and caring during the time we had to prepare. She guided me through the process giving me breaths of hope all while staying on top of new developments in the case. Melissa really impressed me with her assertive yet subtle, professional manner of strongly proving a point. In the courtroom, she is a lion! No other attorney could've represented me better and for that I highly recommend her. My case was closed with justice and victory on our side!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Miami Lakes, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
