Reuben Doupe’ is one of the finest Marital Family Law attorneys in Florida and I am thankful Reuben was my attorney during my divorce experience. I hired Reuben to represent me during a very contentious and lengthy divorce which, due to no fault of Reuben’s, was perpetuated by my malicious and litigious ex-spouse. Through years of motions, hearings, depositions, mediations, and trials, Reuben remained diligent and dedicated to doing everything within his power and the law to protect my best interest and those of my children. Reuben skillfully navigated through my high-conflict divorce, child custody/visitation issues, child support issues, and alimony issues with great professionalism, knowledge, and experience. And when the time arose, Reuben’s expertise, skill, and integrity are never more evident than when he was in court litigating. Reuben is a fierce litigator who will fight for his clients. Reuben is well-respected by his peers, and feared by lesser attorneys, because Reuben is ethical. Reuben works hard for his clients in and out of the courtroom and the proof is in the outcome for his clients. I proudly recommend Reuben to all my friends.

I hired Reuben over 5 years ago to initiate, negotiate and settle my divorce. My divorce was extremely high conflict, resulting in many emails, child custody issues, and court dates. Reuben was always available to take my calls, emails and concerns. If he was not in the office, his paralegal was always on standby to relay messages and respond within hours. I am very impressed with this attorney and have recommended him in the past to many people who have used him and thought he goes above and beyond for his clients. His ethics are unquestionable and he will always make the best choices for your case. People need to realize that divorce is ugly and painful. We will not always get our way, but the attorneys are there to offer a middle ground. A client's only hope is that they have a truthful, honest, and knowledgeable attorney to lead them through the darkness of divorce, so that they will come out in the light. Reuben can and will do this for you. I stand by him like he stood by me.

This attorney was recommended by an attorney-friend of Mr. Doupe's in Fort Myers, so I hired Mr. Doupe' for my divorce case thinking he was from Naples. I was under the impression he was a Naples attorney only to find out he did 95% of his work as referrals from Fort Myers. This was a well-known divorce case and he did nothing to find necessary and imperative discovery of marital assets for me in my thirteen year marriage or even file for temporary alimony for support since I am in my 70's. He was unethical and unprofessional because he worked against me and with my husband's attorney to get my husband everything. I paid this attorney $14,000 in five months and I ended up being intimidated and pressured over and over to sign the MSA and not go to trial. I would not recommend this attorney to anyone who needs an attorney to truly represent their case in an ethical and professional manner and to be fair and honest in all circumstances.

I found Reuben to be a true professional. In my view, his ability to listen, understand, and develop a plan resulted in a sooner than expected settlement.

Sued a former employee who embezzled from me and the bank who cashed the checks. He recovered ALL of my lost money. I have heard many attorneys who said they hated to oppose Mr. Cohn

Mark helped me navigate an issue whereby my employer terminated me while we had a contract. Mark advocated for me, and while we are still in litigation, has been able to extract some powerful evidence for my case. I'm confident in his ability to provide a favorable outcome.

I was very satisfied with the results. Alan was very knowledgeable and explained everything until I understood exactly what was going on in my situation. If I'm ever in need for an attorney, this will be my first phone call

Alan was involved for nine months in my real estate dispute which took over two years to conclude. He joined with his partner Michelle Hurvitz who had been leading the case since it began. Because of Covid I was not able to meet Alan in person, but it really didn't matter. His dedication and compassion were readily apparent by phone and zoom, and I immediately trusted his integrity and outstanding legal skills and judgement. He worked smoothly with Michelle to move my case to a successful verdict (We won!). They communicate openly and honestly and hone each other's thinking. I've taught executive teamwork in many companies and countries, and these two, Hamisch and Hurvitz, are the real deal.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Naples, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
