I'm very thankful that a good friend of mine referred me to Family First Legal Group a few years back when I made the difficult decision to get divorced. The law firm took a team approach and while most of my case was expertly handled by Terry DeSalvo Jr, along with his efficient paralegal Michelle Wilson, I was also helped on a number of occasions by Alex Peterson. My case primarily focused on child custody and Terry did a fantastic job implementing an aggressive strategy to uncover and document my ex's issues. I'm so thankful to report that after a long and drawn-out legal battle, I was granted full custody of my kids. While some may consider the legal fees for a challenging divorce like mine to be expensive, I believe that the services offered by Family First Legal Group were worth every penny. I have peace of mind every night when I put my kids to bed knowing that they are safe and that is priceless. Going through a divorce is an emotional rollercoaster but Terry and Alex offered sound legal advice throughout the entire process. I highly recommend this law firm!

It is quite arguably the worse time in one's life when you must seek legal counsel, guidance and the services of a divorce attorney. Attorney DeSalvo represented me from the start to the end of my case. He was knowledgeable, patient, confident and most importantly provided very tough information and decisions to me in a thoughtful and respectful way. He has the ability to show compassion for the truly emotional aspect of the situation while prioritizing facts and guidance to get to a solution.

When I needed an attorney to guide me through the Florida divorce process, I met with Terry De Salvo who immediately put me at ease with his professional and confident approach. His level of experience and flexibility as my case evolved was such an important factor for my peace of mind. Paralegal Lisa Singleton was an absolute godsend for communication, organization, and for explaining clearly my options and next steps all through the process. I found their services to be affordable and they clearly documented and kept me informed about time spent and costs. When my divorce morphed from a contested situation to an amicable, uncontested case, Terry made sure I knew the possible impact of every decision I made, while maintaining his encouraging and supportive approach toward the unique aspects of my specific situation. He worked with opposing counsel in a professional and respectful manner which I appreciated. Later in the process, He and Lisa made it possible for me to move out of state with complete confidence that my divorce would continue to move forward in a timely manner. I highly recommend Attorney Terry De Salvo and the Family First Legal team. They were frank in their advice and compassionate in their understanding. From the moment I walked through the door to the processing of the final paperwork, I was treated with kindness, confidentiality, respect, and professionalism. Again, they have earned my trust and respect, and I highly recommend them.

Mark helped me navigate an issue whereby my employer terminated me while we had a contract. Mark advocated for me, and while we are still in litigation, has been able to extract some powerful evidence for my case. I'm confident in his ability to provide a favorable outcome.

Alan was involved for nine months in my real estate dispute which took over two years to conclude. He joined with his partner Michelle Hurvitz who had been leading the case since it began. Because of Covid I was not able to meet Alan in person, but it really didn't matter. His dedication and compassion were readily apparent by phone and zoom, and I immediately trusted his integrity and outstanding legal skills and judgement. He worked smoothly with Michelle to move my case to a successful verdict (We won!). They communicate openly and honestly and hone each other's thinking. I've taught executive teamwork in many companies and countries, and these two, Hamisch and Hurvitz, are the real deal.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Naples, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
