Jonathan Culver is a top-notch attorney. He made a very emotional and painful process so easy for me and my family. He was always available to answer questions and calm my fears. He was always very professional and took his time to explain the complex legal situation I had. I would definitely recommend Mr. Culver to anyone who has a need for a family law attorney.

Very knowledgeable with current laws and what is being presented to our governor for future laws. He's answered all the questions we've had and what we've presented him with. His paralegal, Tammy, is fantastic and whenever we speak to either of them we always are satisfied with the answers we receive! They've both gone out of their way to help us with documents needed or filled out for court. I recommend them to anyone who is need of a family lawyer.

to all who read this review, if you need an attorney for any type of litigation i recommend Jonathan Culver to be the best prepared attorney. Jonathan Culver represented very professionally in a 2012 child support custody after another local attorney withdrew on my case. my case also had a violation of a restraint order. the most important thing that i liked about Mr culver was that he was not intimidated by who he would be facing in court at all, whereas the attorney that withdrew from me was. my x wife's attorney was supposed to be a genius or so i heard. when i posed this question to Mr culver, he's reply was that facing attorney of any experience is not a worry or concern to him. he explained to me that when he goes in front of any judges and against any attorney that he goes well prepared and ready for the case. he told that he does that with all his cases. i was very pleased in 2012 with his representation. my son has been living with me since then. i did not have to pay for my wife's attorney fees and his cost of representation was fair. i have called on Mr culver since then a few times to ask questions and he has always returned my call and has given me good advice as well as ample time to talk. his secretary is also very professional and all the paperwork are done appropriately. Jonathan Culver won my case in 2012 with the use of two case laws which he handed to the judge and the opposing attorney. the case laws were applicable to my case. neither the judge or the opposing attorney had a problem with Mr culver on that day. i highly recommend jonathan Culver with any family issues and all of his other law knowledge. i also recommend his staff as well. just recently i called him to ask questions and he gave me his best advise over a telephone consultation. on other occasions i have visited his office for the consultations as well. great job in 2012 Mr culver ! sincerely.. Came off very knowledgeable during the consult and very eager to help. Then the retainer was paid in full and everything went down hill from there. He was never available for questions, he makes decisions on your case without consulting you first, he would not respond promptly to opposing council which makes his client look bad, he is very unprepared, wasted my 1 hr pre hearing consult with stuff he could have had a secretary do, he did not prepare for our hearing, failed to show very crucial evidence in court, did not question the opposing side when I told him they were lying about certain stuff (which he had proof right in front of him that I supplied) was very cocky and arrogant. All this ended up costing my two year old daughter to go for over night visitation with her Dad she had not seen in a year, that was violent, suffered mental illness and was unmedicated. Then when I confronted him about the lack of time or concern he showed for my daughter or our case he withdrew from my case, left us without a lawyer and kept the entire retainer (which he in no way, shape or form earned). Now I am left trying to fix his mistakes and seek new council. You would be better off representing yourself then hiring this attorney. Also he is never in his office. He's "out" more than in. His paralegal is nice. That's all he has going for him

I'm an attorney in Northwest Florida and I hired Dot Sims to handle an expert witness (a psychiatrist) because he was related to a good friend of mine. Dot was amazing and by the time she was done, the defendant withdrew this expert from testifying at trial. A more evident example of her skills is hard to imagine. I highly recommend Dot Sims not only as your attorney, but as co-counsel for your attorney.

Recently i have had the great honor and pleasure of working with Dorothy Clay Sims on a complex traumatic brain injury case. I have been practicing law for nearly 40 years in jurisdictions all across America. In that time i have represented plaintiffs multiple times in brain injury cases. I have NEVER EVER had anyone that was more knowledgeable, creative, or effective in any brain injury case than Dorothy Clay Sims. She is not only the most amazing person in America in this area of the law, she is also a great pleasure to work with, and her work ethic is unmatched. I strongly and quite simply recommend her to anyone who has a need for who i feel is the absolutely best traumatic brain injury lawyer in America. Dan

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ocala, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
