Mr. Guilfoil is a great attorney! I am extremely grateful for Paul Guilfoil's legal representation in my son's criminal case! Mr. Guilfoil has a great reputation and a great working relationship with the State Attorney’s Office. He was able to plea this case down to one of acceptance. A decision of this importance takes time, patience, and a clear head and this attorney (and office) fully handles this the best way possible. Mr. Guilfoil was very accessible and returned messages in a timely manner, with some being after regular office hours! My son and I highly recommend Mr. Guilfoil as your criminal defense attorney and guarantee you he will work hard to get the best possible outcome for your situation as he did with my son.

One of the most straight forward attorneys out there. Paul refuses to beat around a bush with you. Very relaxed, laid back, down to Earth type of man. I completely trust him with everything and you should too. Has always done me right on a great deal of cases!

Truly blessed to have found this lawyer. Even though not a felony charge, enough to cause a major headache and 2 months of anxiety. Paul from the beginning gave an outcome of his thoughts on the case, even though there was no guarantee and I was on edge until the State finally dropped the case. Paul was very knowledgeable of the law, very professional, understood the system, kind and patient and had the experience to ascertain a situation clearly. I had faith in him the whole time and felt he always represented my best interest. I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of his services.

I was referred to Paul by a well respected gentleman of this community. I was involved in the situation where I was arrested and charged with a felony crime. I went to the respective gentleman‘s house and asked him if he knew a good lawyer. He goes ... “yeah I know a great lawyer” “his name is Paul Guilfoil”. I called and made an appointment with Mr. Guilfoil . During the first appointment with him we spoke for three hours in his office and from there we traveled to the end as the jury said ..”NOT GUILTY!” Paul was a very accessible by phone or if you left a message he was prompt in returning calls. During the trial, Mr. Guilfoil was very articulate of the timeline of events during his opening statement . He mentioned a comment that the alleged witness said and one of the jurors mumbled ..”oh no he didn’t”.. as a gesture of disbelief that this person could actually say this which was very appalling. In the cross examination of the states witness Mr. Guilfoil had the witnesses testimony going this way and that way… The witness couldn’t keep the testimony straight. (Paul had him chasing his tail!) In the closing statement Mr. Guilfoyle drove home the fact that there was “reasonable doubt” that I was guilty and the witnesses testimony was totally bogus. In closing, Paul was very professional and I would recommend him to anyone. If the occasion was to arise that I would ever need the services of a lawyer again, I would call Paul. Thank you for being an honest and straight forward attorney. Keep up the great work!!!

Paul is and extremely professional and competent attorney. He took over my case after two other attorneys struggled with the case. He took the time to get to know the case from beginning to end which revealed all the facts that ultimately helped us achieve the positive result we were looking for. I have no hesitation in recommending Paul to help anyone with any legal issues they might have. In fact he is already helping a friend overcome their difficulties.

Mr. Blinn made me feel very informed and comfortable about making the decision to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. He is very kind and compassionate and really took the time to listen to my questions and concerns and did not make me feel rushed. He is extremely knowledgeable and explained things in a way that I could easily understand. Everything went exactly as he said it would and I was prepared each step of the way. He really made a very hard and depressing thing such as bankruptcy into an easy process and gave me the fresh start that I needed. I have already and will continue to refer people to Mr. Blinn's office.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ocala, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
