STAY AWAY FROM THIS FIRM. My retainer was wasted, and no services were provided. Please take the time to read ALL the negative reviews carefully, as the positive ones are likely fake. I contacted your firm in March 2024 and paid to speak with Felicia, explaining that I only needed a lawyer if a trial or motion was requested by the other party. I specifically asked that no action be taken and that no time or money be wasted otherwise. This was the agreement for me to pay the retainer. However, once the retainer was received, your firm insisted on reaching out to the other party, promising results. One email was sent to the other party with zero results. Despite this, Darryl Block, the lawyer in charge, continued to contact me, claiming he was trying to understand and resolve the case. I was billed for every email and communication, even though they were not requested. No progress has been made, but my retainer continued to be depleted. By July, Mr. Block stopped communicating with me, went on holiday, and, after returning in August, promised to prepare a request to send to the other party. I never seen it nor received it, but I was still billed around a thousand dollars for it. Shortly after, he told me he was leaving the firm. I was left without a lawyer, and the minimal knowledge Mr. Block had of my case was lost. No progress made, and the retainer continued to decrease. The firm promised that another lawyer would take over the case and review it at no additional charge. I briefly spoke with Crystal Phillips, the second lawyer, who promised to review my case and call me back the following week. I never heard from her again. No progress made, and the retainer kept decreasing. I repeatedly reached out to Felicia, the person responsible, but was never able to speak with her again. The money was in her pocket, and it seems her job was done. I kept submitting complaints through the portal, which was the only way to contact you, other than by phone where an operator would answer and say they would pass on the information. No progress made, and the retainer continued to go down. Another lawyer, Neyza Guzman, was promised to me. I received one phone call from her saying she would review the case and get back to me. But the story was always the same, I never heard from anyone. I tried to complain again and requested that my case be escalated or that I speak with someone responsible. All I received were more charges for messages I sent, and I was billed for “We will escalate your case” or “we will respond,” when nothing ever came of it. No progress made, and the retainer kept being depleted. In November 2024, I requested that the firm formally terminate our engagement and issue a refund. Now, in December, after thousands of dollars spent, I am still being charged more just for requesting a refund—$100, $30, $50—while my remaining retainer continues to be depleted with every excuse. While waiting for my refund, I request to have all my money returned, $5,000, since no work was done and 9 months of my time was wasted. Time that could have been used to progress my case. In the meantime, I will be filing a complaint with the Florida Bar in Tallahassee: https://www.floridabar.org/public/acap/filing-a-complaint/. I believe every customer who has had their money taken while no work was done, and only procrastination and excuses were made, should be aware of this and do the same. Feel free to contact me at[email protected].

Competent and diligent representation

2
Passionate and caring advocate
“Felicia is a very passionate, intelligent, and trustworthy person and attorney. With her drive for success, she will take anything head on and advocate for you and your rights.”
3
Effective communication and guidance
“Felicia talks a big game, filed several motions, but ultimately didn't advance or progress my case in any substantial way. In fact, I lost the upper hand in my case as a result of her poorly calculated moves and paid about $5000 in legal fees to her which was a total waste of money.”
Cons
1
Questionable billing practices
“Rude staff would not recommend. Charging someone for brief emails and a phone call let alone not sending a final bill as requested and being told yet again I'm going to be charged for communication feels like robbery.”
2
Lack of follow-through and case progress
“Felicia talks a big game, filed several motions, but ultimately didn't advance or progress my case in any substantial way. In fact, I lost the upper hand in my case as a result of her poorly calculated moves and paid about $5000 in legal fees to her which was a total waste of money.”
3
Aggressive and confrontational approach
“Would not recommend. The feeling of being bullied does not sit well with me.”

I couldn't be more satisfied with the the service I received. Everything that was promised was delivered, and more. My case was dismissed, I saved money, and I didn't have to waste my time with a traffic class. Jeff Lotter and Marissa were attentive and helpful. I hope I won't need to seek this kind of help again, but if I do, I know who to call.

Awesome experience being represented by the Law Office of Jeff Lotter. Talked to them twice and explained the situation and they handled everything else. Had the whole case dismissed: no fines, no points, no school, nothing!

The group I represent had several very technical legal questions that we needed answered very quickly. Ms. Bertrand listened carefully to our problem, asked several questions on issues we had not even considered, and was able to get back to us with a detailed answer and recommendations on how we should proceed in a timly manner. Our group has never had full time legal consultants, but we do now. We highly recommend this firm and Ms. Bertrand in particular. She was very personable, easy to understand and she answered our question in a way that was easy for us who do not speak "legalize" to understand.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Orlando, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
