Cons
1
Potential delays in initial case review and lack of timely communication
“It wasn't until having the attorney that referred us to him give him a call that the records were reviewed (by a nurse rather than a doctor). 2
Risk of feeling like "just a number" and not receiving personalized service
“Again you are nothing more than a number and you will not receive any personal service.”

I had never needed an attorney before, but when my son suffered a birth injury i knew i needed a good one, an experienced one, someone i could trust to keep our best interest at heart. I found all of this in John T. Gilbert at the FL Firm. From the first time he drove over an hour to meet us and hear our story all the way through to our settlement, our legal process was made as easy as possible and i felt confident i had the right people to get the right results. My sons first year of life was hard enough, The Florida Firm took a huge burden off our entire family, allowing us to focus on helping our son get better. We are forever grateful to John, Kristen and The Florida Firm for their help and competence at such a hard time in our lives. - Wendy T. - 2019

My experience with The Florida Firm was the best that I could have hoped for considering the difficult time my family was going through at the time. My husband suffered a devastating stroke. Doctors took him off his blood thinner medicine for a procedure, which was not even necessary for that particular procedure. He should never have been taken off and because he was, he suffered a massive stroke that left him paralyzed on the right side, unable to speak intelligibly, and with cognitive damage. He now resides in a nursing home. Our lawyers, Jon and Ron, were able to negotiate with 4 defendants and their lawyers to secure a substantial sum of money for us. They made the whole process as painless as possible, keeping me informed at all stages of the process, preparing me for depositions, checking in with me on a regular basis to keep me informed of our status in the lawsuit. They fought for my husband and our family and were always ethical and professional in all aspects of our case. The paraprofessional, Rachael, was so great at keeping me informed and answering all my questions, clarifying as needed, and always professional and gracious as well. I would highly recommend The Florida Firm to anyone seeking an attorney concerning medical malpractice situations!

I hired Jon Gilbert after a terrible auto accident - and very glad I did! Jon is a very experienced personal injury attorney. He listened to me and helped me achieve results. A few things worth noting about this law office: the staff is very organized and responsive. My questions were answered promptly and I was consistently in the loop on the status of my claim. Overall, the experience with Jon Gilbert was a bright spot on a tough situation - highly recommend!

I contacted John Gilbert after my car accident and he answered my call immediately. My daughter and I were injured when the careless driver hit my car from front. He and his associates meticulously handled our case from beginning to end. Mr. Gilbert is not only an excellent lawer, but also very caring person. He made sure we got the proper medical care while he defended our case. I highly recommend him and his associates!

After suffering the tragic and sudden unexpected loss of my son due to the result of negligence by another, I went on a mission to find an attorney that was just as determined as I was to reveal the truth and seek justice at any cost. I met with several attorneys over the course of 6 months. I was told many things; good and bad. I had some attorneys staff try to pressure me into giving them my case, others told me everything that I would come up against and that I wouldn't stand a chance. Of all the attorneys and staff members I interviewed for my case, John Gilbert and his team stood out to me. Having been a litigation Paralegal for the last 12 years, I knew exactly what to look for in a good firm and a good attorney; John and his firm possessed the exact honesty, drive, and genuine desire to seek the truth of what occurred in my case that ultimately lead to the death of my son. Over the course of several months we discussed the facts of my case, detail after detail, over and over without exhaustion. John and his team gathered records and scoured them to identify the tiniest details and nuances to bring forth in scrutinizing depositions. John represented my case just as boldly and diligently as I would have if I was able. He and his team exceeded my expectations, lacking no detail, ultimately bringing my case to a successful end. As tough as the facts of my case were, John and his staff were continuously cordial, sympathetic, and in fact were so invested they grieved my loss with me. Don't let the media that is saturated with commercials bias you for what you might think a good attorney is. A good attorney will walk the walk with you, cry with you, and guide you with endless endurance to the end. That is what John Gilbert and his team did for me and my family.

The group I represent had several very technical legal questions that we needed answered very quickly. Ms. Bertrand listened carefully to our problem, asked several questions on issues we had not even considered, and was able to get back to us with a detailed answer and recommendations on how we should proceed in a timly manner. Our group has never had full time legal consultants, but we do now. We highly recommend this firm and Ms. Bertrand in particular. She was very personable, easy to understand and she answered our question in a way that was easy for us who do not speak "legalize" to understand.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Orlando, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
