I contacted the Umansky law firm on February 2015 after been working with another attorney for about 8 months and having not results. Thanks to God I found Anna Wedge-McMillen who took my case and saved my life, I highly recommend her and the Umansky law firm.

I would highly recommend anne to anyone looking for a lawyer that will get you results. Anne represented me on my VOP case and completely exceeded my expectations ! I was expecting to have to do at least 3 weeks in jail but anne had me in and out in exactly a week (which is highly unusual with VOP cases). She also was very understanding and worked with me after there were some complications with payments. The only complaint I had was she is a very busy attorney so sometimes it was hard to get in contact with her, but when I emailed her she usually got back to me same day, even after office hours so I would recommend email versus trying to call her. I cannot thank Anne enough for everything she did for me and for being so understanding. She truly believes the firms motto of "everyone deserves a second chance" and I highly recommend her !

Was given the run around for several months for a simple motion. Takes several emails just to get a response. First motion was filed incorrectly, then attorney told us to get contact info from professional so she could explain what needed to be done, and that the motion would be refiled with no extra charges Several weeks later after forwarding this information was told to do it ourselves. No problem should have just said so. Forwarded new evaluation from Professional no response for several weeks, then finally a response that it was filed but with no motion. They wanted to recharge to file a motion that they filed incorrectly. This is after four months of poor representation and delays plus the money spent ( several 100 dollars) on classes deemed unnecessary by professional. All this waste of time and money with no results for a simple Motion to Modify conditions of Probation. Would have hate to see what would have happened if this attorney was our representation in criminal procedures or at trial. All this after we had spent over $ 10,000 with this law firm.

My Case was a unique one because it was very new and dealing with science and statues that were outdated and confusing for most people to fully understand even LEO and the states attorney . The States Attorney thought they had a good case against me and falsely arrested me based on what they believed to be probable cause.. Once Anne heard about my case she was like a pitbull ready to tear the investigation apart. She found soo many flaws in how the investigation was handled and many mistakes that LEO made in the process. It came down to the point where the States Attorney office wanted to offer a plea deal and I decided that it would not be in my best interest to accept the plea offer and they were using the plea deal as a cop out for their mistakes and to recover the costs and tax dollars that LEO and SAO wasted in the investigation. Anne and I decided we would reject the plea and take the case to trial since we knew we would tear the prosecution apart during trial and I was innocent of any wrong doing. On the day before the trial scheduling conference the states attorney decided it was in their best interest to file no prosequi in the case. We had won. case closed. My advice to anyone that wants a lawyer that will take their case very seriously and dig deep into the facts of the case and make you feel like you are fully in control of the case. Anne is very positive and upbeat and is a very analytically. Being a former state prosecutor she is very connected in the legal world and knows a lot of the right people. She is not what some would call a "Plea Lawyer" and she will take your case all the way to trial if she feels it is in your best interest that you can win. Thank you Anne for your help.

Anne is an excellent attorney. My case was not an easy one, because of the original charges, the Lake county prosecutor was not willing to dispose of the case. I did nothing wrong yet they pushed Anne to her limits. Pit Bull is the best way to describe this attorney in handling cases. She is relentless and fearless, and she knows cases from top to bottom. Her empathy for me and my case was one that me feel so much at ease. A small charge that had severe, long term consequences. Thank you and your entire staff for the resolution of my case. I took a voluntary plea just so this case would go away, and I got the results I was wanting. Anne knew I did nothing wrong yet our justice system makes it difficult to resolve cases that should have never been in court to begin with. If you ever need a lawyer that is on your side and will resolve the case effectively then Anne Margaret Wedge-McMillen is the one to have. Excellant job well done.

The group I represent had several very technical legal questions that we needed answered very quickly. Ms. Bertrand listened carefully to our problem, asked several questions on issues we had not even considered, and was able to get back to us with a detailed answer and recommendations on how we should proceed in a timly manner. Our group has never had full time legal consultants, but we do now. We highly recommend this firm and Ms. Bertrand in particular. She was very personable, easy to understand and she answered our question in a way that was easy for us who do not speak "legalize" to understand.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Orlando, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
