I had a simple case. This guy had 0 defense. He came unprepared. Even though he knew he lost an extremely simple case due to his own negligence, he refused any refund. He then blatantly lied to a jury of his peers when I brought up his unethical actions to the Florida Bar. Worst attorney I've ever dealt with. PS. I, being uneducated in law, was able to not only file my own appeal, but file every motion and document required, and provide a winnable case, in the appeal courts. Pretty pathetic that a non lawyer can out lawyer a real lawyer in a court that is extremely difficult to navigate. He could have owned up to his mistake, gave back my money, and we both could have moved on. But he cared more about the money then being any kind of decent human being. Even his very first words in court were "Do you have my check". Not even a pre-game strategy session.

Mr. Dingus didn’t help us at all with my son’s case. We provided all the necessary documentation to get my son released. Mr. Dingus failed to get the papers from Georgia Probation and Refuge of Hope Rehab. He talked my son into taking a plea deal. My son had been off probation for a year then they come back and said you violated probation. When we called Mr. Dingus he said send me 3 thousand and I will get him out. No such thing, I requested half of our money back but oh course he didn’t reply. I’m reporting him to the Florida Bar. He is incompetent as he has health issues and shouldn’t be practicing law.

While searching for a lawyer for my husband I ran into many different lawyers most ridiculously expensive or they just did not seem confident enough I reached out to Mrs downing after he heard of her through someone he was incarcerated with she instantly took weight off of my shoulders. She not only did everything we requested but understood my situation as well she had him home the first time she stepped into the court room. Her and Mr Shepard are a great pair I was beyond satisfied with their service and they blew my mind. If you are looking for a attorney thats affordable and the best in the business Shepard law is where you want to be

We hired Jean to represent our son, and she did a great job. She was responsive to our questions, even after hours. All the charges were dismissed. Also, we live in another state, and none of us had to travel to Florida, which saved us a good chunk of money.

Ms. Downing worked on my case before the recent problems of Veterans trying to get their benefits from VA employees who are not Veterans, made the national news. Having a 4.0 GPA in paralegal and criminal justice studies-graduating Summa Cum Laude soon, my perception is that any parties not approving Ms. Downing;s work and opposing my excellent rating, should support their position by sending me their 4.0 transcript, I will send anyone mine.

As for the process, Colin McMichen gave me a frank preliminary assessment of how my case was likely to play out. I was comfortable from the beginning of our attorney-client relationship, that I was able to have regular communications with him. He gave me easy instructions to follow. I was not rushed in anyway, he took time to ask questions and answer questions at the beginning to get to know me. He was very easy to talk with. Being in two different states, we did everything via email and phone, with no complications. No surprises...just thankful, thank you Colin for your hard work and Sharon also. So, all and all.... he’s alright for an Auburn fan.... Roll Tide

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Panama City Beach, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
