WARNING- She will take your case, post pone court dates and push them out to prolong the process until your last payment with her is made. As soon as you make that last payment (months later) all of a sudden your court day will finally come. Your case will be over and you’ll be left with the same terrible end result as the next person who had no lawyer to begin with. My friend and I got charged at the same time for the same thing only difference with our outcome was that I paid this scammer $1800 and he paid nothing. She did NOTHING. Communication was terrible, she will not respond to your calls or texts. I feel she should get her BAR revoked. She is a scammer. If she decides to show, she will show up to court so unprofessionally which is embarrassing. Helen Silva of Seminole/Volusia county is a joke of a “lawyer.” Honestly felt so disappointed and scammed .

We hired Helen based off a recommendation and the original meeting that we had. She stated her approach in the family law case and were very pleased with her outlook. Paid her the $4,000 deposit and she immediately filed the emergency petition. The petition got denied and we have not heard from her since. Have made many attempts to contact her via email, texts, and phone calls and to no avail have we had a response. I would never recommend her to anyone for any type of case!

Hired Helen for divorce. Paid her $5,000 and she stated that would cover up to mediation. Helen has failed to send back acceptance of petition. She emailed me to execute on 8/28 and I emailed back the same day. I never received and email from her confirming she sent it. I followed up several days after with no response. I also told Helen that I wanted to draft a settlement offer, waited several weeks and never received a draft. Same went for the response to petition and response to offer sent by husband when I told her I wanted to proceed. It didnt get done.

I am very happy I decided to go with Scott Herring as my lawyer! I had talked to a large firm before deciding to go with Herring & Herring and couldn't be more pleased. They made me feel important and not just another number. I was involved in a bad car accident and he took very good care of my case. Scott fought to get me the justice I deserved when the insurance company was being unreasonable. He is very knowledgeable, keeps you informed and he has your best interest at heart. I will definitely recommend Scott Herring to my family and friends!

I worked with Scott and his father (Michael Herring Sr.) when I was falsely accused of a domestic violence crime. Both Scott and his father fought to prove my innocence aggressively. Scott was extremely knowledgeable about the law and went above and beyond to explain the details of my case to me. He was successful in getting my charges dropped. The whole team (Mike, Scott, and Nell) truly care about their clients and will fight to represent their best interests.

I had my fist DUI with no prior convictions or tickets. This was a very embarrassing matter to me and could of been detrimental to my career growth amongst other things. I had counsel from other high profile lawyers but went with Scott based on the Family oriented office that he belong to in practicing with his father (who's proven successful) and managed by mother who was extremely compassionate. Scott handled my case with a seasoned professional approach that gave me peace of mind in every interaction. His knowledge about every aspect and scenarios was impressive. His approach was prompt, thought out and effective in every step of the way. In the end when I blew a 1.52 and made a terrible mistake in my life in possibly harming others, Scott was able to convey and properly present my case in which I got it to Pre-Trial Diversion and now will not show on my record at all. Please take this recommendation and call Scott and family so that you too can see the wonderful work that he and his family can do for you as they did for me. LPHW

Mr. Helms has handled a number of matters for our family and friends we have referred to him over the past 25 years. In one case, we referred a potential client to him that had been damaged as a result of an auto manufacturer. The auto company refused all attempts at settlement from other attorneys. When Mr. Helms called, they quickly settled for one million dollars. In another case, a friend injured in an accident was about to accept a $15,000 settlement as advocated by another Central Florida lawyer. Mr. Helms reviewed her case as a favor to us. The defendants settled for $320,000 when he took over the case from the other lawyer. Mr. Helms is a gentleman, highly respected by his peers and the best attorney we have ever met. We recommend him highly.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?

Understanding potential obstacles helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sanford, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
