Mr. Corchnoy is one of the most knowledgeable education attorneys that provided extremely useful, precise guidance and/or information even when his schedule was full. He made time to assist us and he actually provided direct answers to our questions and concerns instead of providing vague non responsive answers. After contacting several attorneys referred by the Florida Bar Referral Service, we reached out to Mr. Corchnoy, and bingo. This is the one we were looking for and his guidance put us on our path to success. He can and will do the same for you. Once you contact him, he can guide you through whatever mess it is that you face in the field of education or administrative law. With luck his caseload will allow him to represent you and if not he has colleagues he can refer you to who also far, far exceed the legal knowledge of the average education attorney. Lucky for you, you found the right attorney. We are looking forward to retaining Mr. Corchnoy or his colleague on our next call. We highly recommend that you look no further and contact Mr. Chorchnoy now! You will be glad that you did.

Mr. Corchnoy advised me regarding an extraordinary situation I was facing. Although I couldn't hire him because it turned out the situation I faced was out of his realm of practice; he treated me very respectfully and gave me as much information as possible to help to steer me in the right direction. I mention the previous because other attorney's did not take me seriously and had the gall to ridicule my serious situation. Whereas, Mr. Corchnoy attempted to help me the best he could despite the fact that he knew I would not be hiring him. That speaks for the level of integrity he possesses. I highly recommend him. On a side note, the issue I faced turned out to be as serious as I thought despite other attorney's telling me to the contrary. I was able to hire an attorney who practiced that particular area of law and resolve my situation.

Jonathan helped us with a construction project that was a disaster. The lead contractor took our money and finished other houses with it, and did not work on ours. The house was for our brain injured brother, and he needed the house to get finished within the promised time frame. Our brother was beat up badly and hospitalized while staying in a rented house waiting for his house to be completed. Jonathan got involved and the builder stepped up to the plate finished the house. We are still in negotiations with the builder because due to the delay of the building of the house, the prices went up and the builder wanted to pass the increase onto us. The delay had nothing to do with us. The owner/builder was not aware of what her general contractor was doing, which is total mismanagement. Jonathan and us still hold her responsible since she owns the company. Jonathan had us send emails as correspondence rather than phone calls to help keep our costs down. He was amazingly familiar with building codes, the building laws, and construction in general. He got the builder to finish the house by the letters he sent which were factual and strong, but not inflammatory or bullying her. His insights, knowledge and expertise are amazing. I absolutely am impressed with Jonathan Seth Corchnoy, as a lawyer. I highly, highly recommend him.

Mr. McIntosh is by far the best criminal defense attorney in the Manatee County and Sarasota county area. I’m not proud to say that I have needed hired representation more than one time. Mr. McIntosh is who I have used every time. I have also referred other people to Bret and he has proven himself time and time again. It doesn’t matter what legal matters you are facing, You will not regret hiring Bret McIntosh.

Mr. Hogreve was a pleasure to work with on the closing of my condominium. He and his Paralegal Kathy were instrumental in making sure we closed on our closing date due to their commitment in communicating effectively with my lender. The closing was flawless and extremely expedient. This was my first home buying experience and I'm so thankful they were there to walk me through everything making a stressful situation not stressful at all. I will recommend his firm to anyone who is looking for closing services, estate planning and incorporation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sarasota, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
