I've been with children and families for many years in Sarasota, so I know the attorneys. When I needed help I went to the best. She was maxed on cases and referred me to Matt. He exceeded my expectations. As well as being smart, quick, talented, and confident, he's a strategic thinker. Matt blew the case out of the water, and opposing council has been in practice nearly as many years as he's been alive. Not only did we win, but he did it so well, the judge rebuked the plaintiffs. His team is incredible as well. If you want an attorney who is in it for you, give him a call.

From the moment I met Matt I knew he was the only one and only attorney in Sarasota for me. He was professional, caring and knew what needed to be done to win my case. He went the extra mile to make sure that I was comfortable with everything. The entire staff is professional and caring, very responsible and responsive when ever I needed to have questions answered.

I hired Matthew and his team to help me defeat a bogus Injunction leveled against me while under advisement of a previous bad legal advisor. For my daughter's sake, and that of my job and ministry, I had to get it set aside. He filed an Appeal with several strong arguments to use with projected costs over $7k and timeframe of 1 year. Through negotiations with opposing counsel, he and his team succeeded in getting the opposition to back down and negotiated a civil minimal contact agreement in exchange for a dismissal of both cases within 90 days, at a much reduced cost out of pocket. I highly recommend Mr. Kowtko.

Hello, my husband and I were in a place in which we literally felt completely lost, confused, terrified for our oldest sons future and someone who we once trusted and loved, who had turned into someone we did not even know, let alone recognize. This person had begun to lie, cheat, steal from both of my parents, myself, my husband, and my children, but even worse than that, they had soon after one of our children's Bar Mitzvah's had taken glow in the dark spray paint and drew a Swastika on our bedroom door, along with a penis. The had also used the glow in the dark spray paint to leave some awful comments as well with another swastika, knowing there was a witness home. We had made an appointment for a consultation and after having explained everything to this attorney and his associates and the depth in which it is causing us so much stress and anxiety. I have been breaking out in rashes and hives from what my sons pediatrician said looked like stress induced eczema. After sitting in this mans office and only having met he and his associates during that consultation, he stepped right up to the plate and was so encouraging that for the first time since all of this started, I had finally felt a moment of peace and hope. I had a glimpse of what not crying for a moment and time felt like and was able to even laugh for a while. There was no way we were walking out of this mans office without hiring him and his associates. This man is amazing, he is knowledgeable and he knows what he wants and is not afraid to ask for it.

Mr. McIntosh is by far the best criminal defense attorney in the Manatee County and Sarasota county area. I’m not proud to say that I have needed hired representation more than one time. Mr. McIntosh is who I have used every time. I have also referred other people to Bret and he has proven himself time and time again. It doesn’t matter what legal matters you are facing, You will not regret hiring Bret McIntosh.

Mr. Hogreve was a pleasure to work with on the closing of my condominium. He and his Paralegal Kathy were instrumental in making sure we closed on our closing date due to their commitment in communicating effectively with my lender. The closing was flawless and extremely expedient. This was my first home buying experience and I'm so thankful they were there to walk me through everything making a stressful situation not stressful at all. I will recommend his firm to anyone who is looking for closing services, estate planning and incorporation.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sarasota, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
