I have worked in family law for over 25 years. When my cousin needed an attorney, I recommend Karen. I would NEVER recommend her again. She was a complete disappointment including her office and paralegal staff. Stay clear of her!

I am so thankful to Karen Steger and her staff. I suffer from PTSD due to an abusive 23-year marriage. I was so scared to file for a divorce. I quit on Karen a few times but she never quit on me. She got me the best settlement she could under difficult circumstances. You are not just a client to Karen because she cares about you as a person. I know I was very difficult for her to deal with. She took this all in stride and forged ahead. I think the fee she charged was reasonable and she allowed me to make payments. I truly owe Karen my life as she set me free from a nightmare. She is extremely well versed in the law and presents herself as a true professional. Please do not hesitate to hire Karen Steger she changed my whole life and she will do the same for you!

I hired the best divorce lawyer, Karen Steger. Once you retain Karen Steger, she and her office staff, will start working for you by serving your soon to be ex as quickly as possible. Make sure you contact the office for any questions, such as, to get clarity about filling out the packet, if you need to put a temporary ‘hold’ on the serving process because unexpected things came up, when will your stbx get served, and/or general questions about the divorce process. The office welcomes your communication so they can do the best for your situation during this difficult time.

Ms. Steger is extremely intelligent and well informed in her area of law. She makes her clients feel comfortable, relaxed, and confident. She was very successful with my case which turned out to be much more complicated than either of us originally anticipated, but because of her expertise in all aspects of family law, I know I couldn't have hired anyone who could have advocated better for my family and me. I have recommended her to friends and do not hesitate to recommend her as an attorney. She also is careful not to waste your money by doing or recommending unnecessary work, but if you feel the need to speak with her, her office personnel will work to accommodate you by fitting in a phone or one-to-one conference.

If you find yourself in a very difficult situation and need a dynamic attorney, retain Karen Steger. She and her group are the best. Karen knows all the ins and outs of the law but at the same time is very caring. I retained her at one point but dismissed the divorce. Many years later I returned and she remembered my entire case without notes. That was impressive. She saved me financially and was very supportive of my emotional situation. Don't waste money and time looking around - just call Karen.

Alex did a presentation at a retirement planning course I attended. I was very impressed with the content of his presentation including and especially his demeanor. Shortly after we met at his office where I also met Katie and Taylor. All 3 are just awesome and gave me the feeling that my estate planning was as important to them as it was to me. Alex asked great probing questions, took great notes followed up with my Financial Planner and shortly after I received all of the documents. They were all prepared exactly right and we finished up with a signing in their office. Alex and his team are first rate and I give them my highest recommendation.

Alex, Katie, and Taylor were so comforting and easy to talk to about putting our home in a trust. They helped my husband and I through every step of the way . Answered every question we had in a way that was very understandable. They are a wonderful team. And enjoyed having them help us through this process.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Stuart, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
