Ms. Lasley goes above and beyond for her clients, and that was exemplified when I retained her to represent me. She even went above and beyond and stayed after her normal work hours to prepare me for mediation, in which she fiercely and aggressively advocated for me. Not to mention, her staff is incredible and extremely responsive. They truly take the nerves out of an anxiety-ridden process. If you haven’t retained her yet, you are truly missing out on exemplary representation.

This is such an amazing family law office and I was very impressed with the handling of my case. The team is incredibly helpful, organized and professional. Attorney Lasley is so knowledgeable and honest. She educates clients about divorce law and the process involved so that you understand each step. Given my case was a long term marriage with high income and assets involved, this guidance helped me feel at ease and I trusted her office wholeheartedly. I felt confident about my representation and felt very well taken care of at every point. My case became very contested, with constant litigation about mismanaged marital accounts, dissipation of assets, and you guessed it, alimony. Their effort and commitment was relentless. I am very pleased with their services and consider myself lucky to have conducted my case with them.

In the most shocking and paralyzing time of my life, Mindi Lasley and her team came to bat for me in such a profound way. I hired her for what I knew would be a litigation blood bath in a child custody case. I knew the opposing side would try every trick in the book...and Mindi was ready. Mindi is bright, sharp, intuitive, and bold. At our first mediation, the opposition came in and demanded everything. I'll never forget Mindi roaring, "We aren't agreeing to any of that!" I knew in that moment that I was in really good hands.I felt protected and empowered. Throughout our very long, drawn-out case, Mindi and her team made sure to advise me on all of the big things and all of the small things. I appreciated her insight on how to respond (and how not respond) to unreasonable emails, requests, and accusations. Mindi and Yanna were always available to council me on minor issues that would come up between me and my problematic co-parent. I always felt like they had my best interest at heart and truly wanted the best outcome for my child. I never felt like a dollar sign or like just another another client. I felt like we had a meaningful relationship throughout the duration of my case (and beyond). I was never left wondering what I was being charged for in terms of attorney's fees; I received a detailed accounting for all money spent out of my retainer. All fees were very reasonable and I always felt at ease. Mindi was always was upfront about possible outcomes of my case; she kept me hopeful, but never gave me false hope. I was able to make informed decisions every step of the way. In the end, we persevered. Mindi not only preserved me as the parent with majority custody, but I even gained more time and our lives have changed for the better. For the first time in years, my child and I have peace and life is great. I owe it all to Mindi and her team.

Mindi, Yanna, and the entire staff are simply amazing! They are competent, professional, and they make you feel confident and in good hands. In addition, they really do care about you as a person, and show you that you are a priority to them. Divorce is a turbulent and stressful time. I did multiple consultations with some of the best lawyers in Tampa before I choose Mindi. I couldn’t have been happier with my choice. And I’m very grateful for everything they have done to help me!

Dina, met a very high standard in Availability, Attitude, and Ability. I call it three tools. Also feel free to use me for a recommendation as / from an out of town Dad who was looking for trusted counsel for a loved one in a legal bind due to driving offenses with related parole violation.

Dina worked with my wife and I when an unfortunate incident occurred and we had some outstanding traffic violations for toll roads. Mrs. Sheridan gave me a fair quote and did not charge anything additional to the wage we agreed upon. She was professional throughout the entire process and kept us both informed as things progressed. Having a great deal of experience working with attorneys both professionally and personally, it is definitely refreshing to be able to reach and receive timely responses from hired council. I would highly recommend Dina Busciglio Sheridan for any traffic offense cases.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tampa, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
