I was referred to Lexie Larkin through my best friend in Tampa and used Lexie for a prenup and Will, power of attorney, health care directive, and living will for estate planning. I was super impressed with her professionalism and knowledge on both family law and estate planning. Her pricing and fees were reasonable, super straight forward and well worth it. Her experience in both family law and estate planning was great because she could let me know how the prenup could impact estate planning issues and I don’t think other lawyers could have done that. I really enjoyed working with her and how everything was easily done remotely by zoom, email, and phone. I was across the state and she was able to set up everything remotely. Highly recommend!

Alexa did an excellent job redoing our wills and adding a trust to it for less than we paid for the original one. she pointed out things that made our protection for our kids stronger when we pass away. We were in and out in about a month and probably could have even done quicker if we got the documents to her faster. it was all done on zoom or phone so we did not have to go to her office unless we wanted to do that. it saved time and money. we only had to pay one fee for her services and then for the notary that came to our house to do the signing. That was easy too. I really recommend her if you want to make sure your will is done right. she is worth the money you spend.

After hearing about Lexie through a good friend, we had a consultation and I instantly knew that she was the attorney I wanted to help me get through a difficult uphill child custody battle. Every step of the way, the advice, availability in stressful times and caring actions Lexie and her paralegal provided was something I believe to be unrivaled. Any motion we attended was well researched and she provided excellent answers to any questions that arose. I truly believe that she had my daughter and Is best interest in mind. Through this extremely stressful, emotional and strenuous process I couldn’t have done it without her or the knowledge and expertise she provided. I believe I made a life time friend and am eternally grateful for Lexie

I could not be happier with Lexie and how hard she worked during my case. I was suddenly in need of a lawyer when my ex-wife was arrested for domestic violence against her current spouse. I remember calling multiple attorneys on my way from Atlanta to Tampa to pick up my daughter, and how I felt during each interaction. During my initial consultation with Lexie, she took the time to listen and thoroughly explain her thoughts. I think initial impressions are important, and felt that Lexie would be a level headed, ethical, and intelligent attorney. I think for people who have gone through the legal process before, you can understand what I mean. When you have consultations, you understand how attorneys view their clients and they way the explain the service they are providing to to you. You want a partner and not someone who will placate you or who looks at you like a "product". Just like hiring a midwife, a real estate broker, etc.. you want a professional who respects you and respects your situation. And that's what I really needed. This was a highly contentious and complicated legal problem. Over the course of a year plus we: navigated jurisdictional issues from three separate states, were able to reverse a procedural ruling into a best interest ruling after an appeal, and set the ground work to eventually change the parenting status quo and establish me as the primary guardian. I had a very complicated case, Lexi was able to stick with me and support me during the process. I have interacted with many family law attorneys (my wife's and my own) and there are many attorneys who wont give it there all during a tough case and try to avoid them. Also, there are those who would compromise their own professional `brand or ethics to please a client. Lexie is highly ethical and a straight shooter; and if you are anything like me, that is very important. Lexie is an amazing advocate and I would highly recommend her to anyone. Thank you Lexi for all that you have done for me and my daughter!

Dina, met a very high standard in Availability, Attitude, and Ability. I call it three tools. Also feel free to use me for a recommendation as / from an out of town Dad who was looking for trusted counsel for a loved one in a legal bind due to driving offenses with related parole violation.

Dina worked with my wife and I when an unfortunate incident occurred and we had some outstanding traffic violations for toll roads. Mrs. Sheridan gave me a fair quote and did not charge anything additional to the wage we agreed upon. She was professional throughout the entire process and kept us both informed as things progressed. Having a great deal of experience working with attorneys both professionally and personally, it is definitely refreshing to be able to reach and receive timely responses from hired council. I would highly recommend Dina Busciglio Sheridan for any traffic offense cases.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tampa, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
