Jeff Wiggs is very personable and professional. Recently needed an attorney in a very unfair case. I trusted him completely. He did not disappoint. He's knowledgeable and has a good sense of compassion. Would highly recommend him.

Mr. Wiggs defended me in a case where false accusations were levied against me. It is terrifying to be accused of something you didn’t do. But Jeff advised me every step of the way. He made me feel comfortable as I knew he was experienced in these cases. Unlike other attorneys who would take the easy way out and ask a client to take a plea deal, Jeff did not do this. He was confident we should move forward as we could win the case in trial. At my age, a plea deal would mean the end for me. That was not something I could consider and I am glad I had someone who was truly on my side and fighting for me. When the trial came, I was well-prepared thanks to all of Mr. Wiggs' invaluable advice and support. I am ecstatic that I was found “not guilty” of the bogus charges against me. I would recommend Jeff to anyone needing a skilled professional in this field. He will get the job done for you!

I was referred to Jeff Wiggs by another attorney I had called for advice. The attorney referred me to Jeff because he said Jeff had a lot more experience in the particular case I needed help in. I was calling on behalf of a family member who was in jail at the time with some serious charges against him. I met with Jeff and realized he was the person we needed to defend my family member. Jeff was able to get him out of jail and advice my family member on his options moving forward. Jeff is a true professional with many years of experience under his belt. My family member decided to retain Jeff as his attorney as his case moved forward to trial. Jeff advised him every step of this journey, always keeping us updated along the way. He worked hard on this case and as a result, my family member won his case in court and was declared “not guilty” of the charges against him. Our family knew he wasn’t guilty, but you never know how a jury will deliberate. It is important for the facts to be known. This was a process of over a year. It was hard on the family, but we felt comforted knowing we were working with someone with Jeff’s expertise. I would, unequivocally, refer Jeff to anyone who needs a professional and experienced defense attorney. I highly recommend him. I would advise anyone who has charges against them, not to rely on a court appointed counsel. They will never give their all to your case. I understand that it’s free, but some things should never be left to chance. It is worth every penny to preserve your freedom.

Jeff defended me against a bogus sexual assault charge. He had my back all the way through my case. Never tried to get me to plea and listened to my needs and wants. He made the state look very silly. My jury was out less than 50 minutes. Not Guilty! By far, based on my experience, the best attorney you could find to defend you.

Tom was my lawyer for 7months. He worked harder than any paid lawyer. He was accurate, concerned, showed interest in my defense. I would recommend Tom to anyone who needs a public defender. He showed like he cared and that right there is what a lot of lawyer's lack. But not Tom. Tom Richard Wieczorek #1.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tavares, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
