2
Knowledgeable, professional, and responsive staff that provides efficient support
“The staff is very easy to communicate with, very professional and efficient. They answered all of my questions.”
3
Successful in achieving favorable outcomes for clients, including in complex family law cases
“Susan and Phil absolutely CRUSHED the opposing counsel with knowledge of evidence, rebuttal questioning tactics, and overall fierceness in court.”
4
Personalized attention and understanding of clients' unique situations
“They listened to me and pushed for things I wanted and backed off when I asked. At no point did I not feel that I was in control.”
5
Committed to protecting the best interests of children and families
“They are definitely worth this review. Thank you Susan, and thank you Kristen. I wish you great women success.”
Cons
1
Expensive legal fees that may be difficult for some clients to afford
“The Chesnutt Law Firm cost me over $30,000 in unnecessary expenses and did absolutely nothing to help me.”
2
Potential issues with communication and follow-through in some cases
“They had sent me to collections for $700. I had given them my taxes every year to pay for her services and I had emailed her office explaining if they can hold off for a few months, specifically by the end of october 2018 or February 2019 when I receive my taxes, like I do every year. The office responded with "ok, we will reach out to you then". October 23, 2018, I receive a collections notice!”

Susan Chestnutt is a force to be reckoned with. Highly intelligent, savy, extremely well versed in her field, exudes confidence and frankly is intimidating - which is EXACTLY what you need when in court and FIGHTING for your child. She doesn't hold back, she doesn't pull punches. She is at the top of her field and that was evident at our first appointment. She not only got what we wanted but got it done much faster than we expected. She was a true blessing. If you need someone who can get the job done - it has to be Susan Chestnutt!!!!

I can’t say enough good things about Susan Chesnutt and her entire team. Special thanks to Kristen for being there for us through the whole process with Susan. When I say they truly care, it’s an understatement. The entire team fought for me like family would. I started out with an attorney from a different law firm who didn’t do his job at all and left me in a bad spot . When I came to the Chesnutt law firm Susan had a big mess to deal with from my old attorney. Let me tell you, Susan is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to family law she cleaned it up fast. Also the opposing counsel had 30 years in the business and Susan ran circles around them. If you are looking for truly the best representation in family law on the Treasure coast it’s definitely The Chesnutt Lawfirm. I have an executed parenting plan in place, I’ve started seeing my son and I’ve started My reunification counseling. I thought this day would never come after a two year battle. Thank you Susan Chesnutt, and your whole law firm.

After reading all of these great reviews my family was looking forward to a consult with Susan! Unfortunately a very unprofessional experience with office staff and a zoom link invite and meeting confirmed only to be cancelled same morning left us with a bad experience and we requested full refund.

Tyler performed some estate planning work for me this year. A thoughtful, intelligent, and knowledgable attorney, Tyler approaches his work with outstanding professionalism and attention to detail -- valuable traits in an individual entrusted to advise on important family decisions. I highly recommend him and will hire him again without reservation.

I have to share. I am very fortunate to have had Mrs. Dorothy Naumann represent me in a “very serious” case. Once meeting with her, I knew I was in good hands. Dorothy makes things happen quick. She is a true professional and so awesome to work with. Dorothy got my case totally dropped. She’s amazing… Thank you for all you did for me. I am grateful!

I had the pleasure of working with Dorothy on several capital cases while she was at the Public Defender's Office. She was an intelligent and compassionate attorney who strongly advocated for her clients. I highly recommend her as a defense attorney.

Out of respect for Mr Murphy we first asked if it was OK to review him? "Wil" was somewhat skeptical of forums like these because of the possibility of misrepresentation and I agree with him. The flip side of this however is no reviews and that doesn't help the desperate future client either.... be assured that I am not a brother-in-law. On the other hand, peer to peer reviews could be perceived as a chance for mutually beneficial nepotism. Nuff said there. I first heard of Wil thru a neighbors case 7-8 years ago. These neighbors were known to be exceptionally fastidious in everything they did ... naturally one would assume this would include vetting a lawyer. They picked the right guy too as Mr. Murphy dismantled the opposing lawyer in court ... needless to say he won the case for them. I mentally filed that info away for the day I need legal help. When that day came we quickly found that Wil sorts thru the emotions to find the pertinent facts, then gives you a couple possible avenues that the case might travel. The efficiency of his manner displays his experience. Incidentally our case was a possible fraud against us fueled by greed and nothing else. In the end we didn't get to see the silver tongued Mr Murphy tear apart another foe but we did get a settlement. The thinking behind this rapid settlement was that the fraudster and their lawyer could see they were "out lawyered". Sorry for wordy review.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Vero Beach, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
