Allison provided a thorough outline of my options to launch a dispensary. She was easy to work with an understand, but also experienced and knowledgeable. Her consultations empowered me with the tools I need to successfully pursue a dispensary while staying within the guidelines of the law. Highly recommend.

I was originally recommended her husband but she ended up taking my case. I was charged sith driving with a suspended license and pulled over under the guise of hands free and had a $2000 charge for the two citations. She got both dropped and I ended up only paying $51. I am so glad I hired here!

When you or someone in your family gets in trouble, you need Allison on your side. She kept us informed through every step of the process and explained our options. She is a University of Georgia alum and knows Athens. We felt her background as an Athens college student helped her understand our situation and enabled her to work for a solution that was the best for a college student. She knows the law and helped us through a very difficult time. I highly recommend Allison McCarthy.

I found Allison McCarthy on this site and after talking to her I knew she was it. I had gotten a DUI in Ga, but live in SC. She went to work immediately for me. Protecting my DL and pressing the prosecutors for evidence to review. She always returned my calls and texts and kept me well informed of everything I needed to know. She explained her strategy and how things worked. I am also a student and she was able to coordinate to get a court date that didn't interfere with my exams, and handled everything so I could avoid any unnessecary drive to GA. Ultimately she worked out a plea to reckless driving which I graciously accepted. Upon finally meeting her at trial, she had a great demeanor. Also I noticed her repor with the prosecutors, fellow defense attornys, and judge was one of respect and admiration. She carefully explained what was going to happen and held my hand through the hearing. Even after all was said and done she has helped me coordinate the mandated requirements and still responds quickly to answer any questions I have. She's there before, during, and after trial. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking representation. She is a consummate professional in every regard. While my bad decisions brought me too her, I could not have made a better decision than choosing her. A+, 5 stars, two thumbs up. Thank you so much for all your hard work and help.

I met Brian when he was a paralegal. We connected alot better than the actual lawyer. Very down to earth, humble guy. . He went out of his way to get the kids to smile. Would definitely hire if ever I'm need of an attorney again!

Everyone that I had contact with were wonderful! I reached out to Mr. Cathey’s firm for a matter that occurred in Florida. Mr. Cathey, Isaiah , and Evelyn took their time and resources to give me information and the name of a firm in Florida. If I ever need a firm in the Atlanta area they would be my first call! Thank you for your help! Patricia Murphy

Massey Law responded quickly to my need for a lawyer after a car accident . Jeff James, my attorney, did a great job of explaining the procedures needed to ensure I was taken care of after an accident that was not my fault. Jeff and Allie Sears, the legal assistant, always responded quickly to any questions and concerns I had concerning my case. Through their hard work and knowledge of the law, my case was handled to my complete satisfaction.

Ben came to my rescue in 2004 when I was fired after being hurt on the job. He got my check reinstated until things were decided in court. He was very professional and got things rolling right away. He has kept me informed of court dates and letters from opposing council. Ben is one of the sweetest and most understanding lawyers I have ever used. I would recommend him to everyone.

When I became disabled I started my claim with the Social Security Administration, I filled out and submitted all the forms and of course was denied benefits. I haven't heard of any first time approvals personally except one. One day I ran into an old acquaintance, he was disabled at this point and had already begun receiving benefits. I explained my situation to him, and he said I should have already had a lawyer. He said I could never have gotten my disability benefit approval without a lawyer named Ben Johnson in Athens, he did a great job for me. I contacted Ben the next week and if I had not contacted Ben for help with my case, it would have long been over because the steps that came after the initial denial, appeal and hearing, my wife and I would have had no clue how to go any further or even that you could. Ben is very knowledgeable and didn't spare any of his knowledge on my case. He didn't wait until something came to him requesting information, he and his assistants were always one step ahead in getting any information they could think of that could be advantageous for my case. Ben and his assistants have been courteous and very helpful from the start. It took a long time, through no fault of Mr. Johnson, but he was able to get my benefits approved and I bless the day I met him.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Athens, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
