I don’t know if you are like me but planning one’s estate is not easy. It is admitting that life is happening to me. I am kind of late in the planning game. I am getting close to 50, I’ve never been married, have no kids, and have been a workaholic. However, I have close friends that have passed unexpected, and after talking with their loved ones, they didn’t have a plan. They never talked about a living will, what they wanted to leave to their favorite charities, if they wanted to start a scholarship, or who to leave a monetary gift. If I were married and had kids, this would be easy. Just bequeath everything to my family. However, what do you do if you have none? Of course, you plan an estate. So, who do you call? I reached out to a friend who knows everyone in Atlanta and asked them for the lawyer they used. I reached out to his firm but after two weeks no response. What does one do next? Go to Google. I did the trusted “estate planning near me” search. Several firms came up and read reviews of all of them. I then checked out their websites. While there were many choices for Estate Planners in Atlanta, I went with Sarah Siedentopf. There were many reasons why, but one of the biggest is when I set up the appointment online through her scheduler, she got back to me via email within the hour. Many lawyers advertise that they will get back with you quick on TV, but after the first one I contacted forgot about me, I had my doubts. When we had our first meeting, there was no pressure. Sarah listened, took notes, and asked pertinent follow-up questions. Then after she got all my thoughts, she went into detail with what I had to do. Planning an estate is not what the lawyer wants; it is what the client wants. What does the mean? It meant I had a bunch of work to do on my end. Having no heirs, I had to look at my life and reach out to people. During that process, I forgot about keeping Sarah in the loop. While she could have hounded me via email weekly, Sarah understood from our initial meeting that this scared me. Not making the will but admitting that I am closer to the last phase of life. Sarah was awesome. When I emailed her and told her I wasn’t ignoring her and that I am still going to create my estate plan. Sarah assured me that this was normal and that she is available when questions occurred, and they did! Sarah was true to her word and answered all my questions (even during non-business hours). After I got my homework done and had a plan for 100% of my assets, I went online and created the appointment to go over the details. The day came and I went to her office. We sat down and went through my plan. She listened, asked questions, and I had all the answers because she prepared me during our first meeting. However, she did give me more things to think about with some of my plans. In the end, by the time we finished, she had a plan to make my ideas legal. A week later, she sent me an email telling me that she was ready for me to sign and to make an online appointment. So, you can guess, I got a little nervous and almost ignored my responsibilities because hey… I am thinking about death. After a few weeks of silence, Sarah reached out to me and said what I was feeling was normal and set up the appointment when I was ready. When I finally set up the signing appointment I came up with more changes and more questions. Sarah was patient, answered my questions, and made all my changes with no issues. We met, signed the documents, and if I had an hour, she would have had all the copies I needed. However, I came back a couple of days later because she was so close to my house. To end this review, Sarah Siedentopf was the best choice I could make to guide me through the process of estate planning. Her patience and professionalism are beyond expectations.
