Marlon is the best! I was involved in a car accident in November of 2019 and had severe bruising afterwards. It wasn’t pretty, but I had no breaks or tears and didn’t think it would be a high-value case. Marlon disagreed. His extensive experience has shown him how that type of injury can have deeper effects that emerge over time, and boy was he right. Over a few months I ended up with knee issues (still present) and nerve damage. He helped me find a wonderful PT and I underwent imaging and injections. The bills still weren’t high, and insurance wasn’t even offering to pay enough to cover them. Marlon kept me constantly informed about the conversations he was having with the insurance company, and knew that if I was ok to wait and be patient, they would come around. I understand that not everyone can afford to wait, and I was very lucky to be able to. It took just over 2 years, but the insurance company agreed to pay limits, and then some. During that time I was able to seek care and do PT and know that Marlon would see to it that I got those costs back with the settlement. Marlon’s transparency and encouragement made me feel like I was doing the right thing the whole time, and I trusted that everything he suggested was in my best interest. I can’t even tell you how many times he told me “The important thing is getting you better.” He cares deeply about his clients, he knows everything there is to know about the processes and the insurance carriers, and I felt extremely comfortable with his expertise. I went into our first meeting thinking my injuries weren’t a big deal, and I’m so glad that he encouraged me to take the time to make sure I was ok before accepting the first (super low) offers. Sure enough, I needed more care than I initially expected, and got the care I needed without fear that I would go into debt for it. I can’t recommend him highly enough, he was such a great resource and friend during a nerve-wracking time (no pun intended). Should you be unlucky enough to need a great attorney, Marlon will absolutely make the whole process painless (no pun intended again haha) and do everything he can to make sure you’re taken care of.

Gold standard for lawyers I can trust. Helped me focus on physical recovery after an accident, calmed my nerves when insurance adjusters refused to take responsibility or pay for needed treatment, and was attentive to my needs throughout. Definitely recommend - not many great lawyers like Marlon who care out there.

I was in a car accident and initially went with a different firm. After over a year of never receiving updates or progress on the case, I decided to seek assistance elsewhere. I found Marlon Rhine's practice and the difference was night and day. Marlon quickly started working on my case and I received updates and REAL progress every week. He was able to accomplish in a few months what my previous representation couldn't achieve in over a year. Marlon makes you feel like he really cares, because he does. His level of service is unbeatable and I would heartily recommend him to anyone who needs these services.

Hands down Kimberly is awesome and trustworthy. Any questions I may have had she gave me answers that I could understand. I felt she was really concerned about what was best for me and my daughter in my divorce case not about her fees which are very reasonable. If I ever need another lawyer she will be my 1st call.

I've gone through estate planning 3 times with 3 different attorneys and Brooks was by far the best. He is clearly smart and knowledgeable but what makes him so good is his ability to make things easy to understand and very clear. In addition, Brooks makes the whole process relatively fast and easy. I trust that we are in good hands with Brooks and I'm happy to recommend him to anyone looking for a good attorney in his areas of expertise.

Brooks Mackintosh worked with us to create all the documents necessary for our estate-planning situation. This included wills, powers of attorney, advance directives for health care, HIPPA authorization, and other related documents. After contacting Brooks to schedule an initial appointment he sent us a questionnaire to gather the necessary personal, financial, and other information to start the estate planning process. We returned the questionnaire prior to our first meeting. During the first meeting Brooks reviewed the information with us and asked several questions for clarification of our current state of affairs. Brooks first provided an overview of the estate planning process and then talked about the various options and levels of estate planning and what he recommended for our situation. Going into the meeting, I had some experience with estate planning but my wife had none. Brook explained the estate planning process in a clear, concise, and thoughtful way that was understandable to both of us. His recommendation was in line with our expectations for estate planning. Brooks then walked us through and explained in layman’s terms each of the documents and options we needed to consider. After going through all the documents he provided us with planning copies so we could consider the information he provided and which options we wanted to select. This closed the first meeting. We considered our options and sent the planning sheets back to Brooks so he could prepare the documents for our next meeting. At the second meeting Brooks had all the documents prepared for review and signatures. He took the time to once again go through all the documents, explain the options, and noted our selections. While reviewing all the documents we decided to make one last minute change to our selections. Brooks quickly updated that document and we were then ready to sign the documents. During the signing process Brooks managed the documents with proficiency, as the signing of the documents required different people signing depending on the document. Brooks’ office staff was able to provide the notary service and witness to the documents. Brooks provided our completed documents in a professional looking and well-organized binder along with instructions on which documents need to be distributed to executor, medical professionals, and people who will act on your behalf should the situation require. Overall Brooks made it an easy and very positive experience. Thanks Brooks!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Decatur, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
