Mr. Carlton was friendly, but we were unsure if we were dealing with him or a secretary from the responses we received, as they would be one-sentence replies, improper grammar, etc. We were shocked that our filing was done by hand and not typed. It wasn't even easy to read. We had to conduct weekly check-ins to get the status of our landlord-tenant dispute case, which took a year and a half. I previously worked as a judicial secretary, so I had some familiarity with cases. In one instance, we were sent someone else's case information. I would not recommend his service unless you want to do most of the work yourself.

I called upon Attorney Matthew Carlton last week to review our HOA documents and ACC guidelines. He took his time and had only 4-business days to get familiar with our documents. My wife and I invited him on our Zoom call on 12/8/20. By the time he spoke on our behalf last night to our HOA Board and ACC governing body, he was well versed and fully prepared in explaining to everyone our POA (Property Owners Association), our rights etc. He was very knowledgeable about voting rights and amongst other things, keeping harmony in a Subdivision. He was absolutely a homerun hire!! We will definitely call upon Attorney Carlton without hesitation shall the need arise!!! Thanks Matt!!

I chose to hire Mr. Carlton for a HOA issue. After explaining my issue over the phone he advised that he had a working relationship with the opposing firm and felt that he could help. However, he was not able to help at all. He actually attributed to making the issue worse which resulted in the amount that I am now having to pay to skyrocket in 3-4 months. He was not very responsive, he was not thorough nor did he have any legal strategy. I had to remind him of the same key points several times. He refused to respond to any questions regarding laws that were specific to my case or case type. He did not seem to very knowledgeable in this area of law nor did he seem to care much about the case after he was hired.

You can tell when someone loves their job. Not only is Mr. Broderick a great attorney, but he also has a great bedside manner. He gives out his personal cell phone to clients, and is (shockingly!) always willing to answer their calls and various questions. Mr. Broderick truly cares about his clients.

I was referred to Doug Tozzi by a colleague of his. From my initial consultation to the final settlement of my case, Doug was wonderful to work with and I would highly recommend him without hesitation. He is very knowledgeable of the laws and legal procedures. He is very thorough and kept me informed throughout the process. I never had to wonder about the status of my case. He went toe to toe with an older very seasoned attorney and was never intimidated...if fact, he shined. My case was extremely complicated and he sifted through the facts to pull out just what he needed so he could understand the case and help us achieve the best result. We ended up going through mediation and I was very impressed with how skilled he was with helping me understand the process and advocate for our best interest, while not allowing me to be my own stumbling block. I am an attorney and have worked with lots of attorneys and I find Doug's demeanor very refreshing. He is smart, sharp and confident but not conceited. His rates are fair and commensurate with his experience. I highly recommend Doug Tozzi.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Decatur, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
