Melissa helped me win a very complicated custody battle against my Ex husband. She kept it very professional and helped me win this case. I think she is the best and I would have not won this case without her knowledge and experience.

I cannot even begin to express the amount of gratitude I have for Melissa. My court proceedings have gone on for a year now. It didn't matter if it was 10:00 at night. Melissa always answers her phone. She has been the calm to my storm. After more than four court dates (not by her fault) I was able to receive everything I asked for in my order. not only was she there for legal support but she supported me emotionally through the whole thing. I've actually continued to recommend her to family and friends and she has been there fully for them as well. I could not be more grateful to someone like her in my life! It actually almost brings me to tears to think about how much she has done for me. Melissa you are amazing! I'm not sure how you felt about our victory in court but to me you are the prosecutor in New York XXX

Ms. Sanford delivered an immaculate performance in court for my friend. She (friend) was in an ugly custody battle with an ex and she held her hand every step of the way. She came prepared for every hearing, was extremely organized both clerically and mentally as she made her points in court. She fought like a lion for her and her children. She is very passionate and quick on her feet. I know that if I ever need something legally I'm coming straight to her. She mic drops like a boss!

I retained Melissa on the advice of several other knowledgeable and local attorneys. We then embarked together on a year long divorce process that ended with a week-long court hearing. I honestly can not imagine how I could have made it through without the support of her and her staff. I had no idea that a divorce could get so crazy and we had to go up against one of the most reputable divorce lawyers in the area. Melissa's knowledge of law; her knowledge of the local court system; her knowledge of the other law practice; her experience and her determination all came together to lead my case to a solid victory. I am so thankful for Melissa. She truly took the basket of lemons that life handed me and helped me make the best tasting lemonade we could. Merle

We were unhappy with our current lawyer, we felt like he was not fighting for us or the children involved. We called around and were able to do a phone conference with Melissa while out of town visiting family. Once we talked to her, she jumped right into our case. We were fighting for custody of my husband's children, she took all of our concerns to heart, she reached out to the guardian, she dealt with the opposing counsel, she truly began to fight for the children and for us! She made us feel very comfortable, answered all of our questions, and addressed our concerns regarding court. The opposing counsel kept trying to get the case pushed back further but Melissa kept on top of everything and we finally got our court date. She was very knowledgeable of our case, she remembered our facts, she made sure to make our concerns known to the judge regarding custody of the children being with the mother. Once we received the final order and my husband received custody of his children, she was still available for us, through a possible appeal, to the motion for new trial that the judge denied - even up to the date of the change of custody - we were always able to reach out to Melissa and get advice or clarification on anything. She was invaluable to us and the children involved. We cannot say good enough things about Melissa and what she did for our family!

Mr. Hofrichter was my attorney handling my SSD case over two plus years ago. He was outstanding . He or whom ever was my contact person they kept me well in formed. When it came down to the actual case going before a judge etc. He had everything in tact. He had done all necessary research with my case. over all he does an outstanding job in handling your case. He leaves no tables unturned, And I would recommend him to anyone who needs or have the same type of case that I had. I promise that they will not be disappointed. He is all the needs all wrapped up in one that a client should or would be expecting. He is number one in my book. And of course we won the case.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fayetteville, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
