Kelly Miles is the lawyer who lawyers call for their own divorce, child support, and child custody needs. As an attorney, I did my homework before I retained Kelly to represent me in my personal divorce, and my research revealed that Kelly Miles is hands down the best domestic relations attorney in the State of Georgia. Kelly knows the intricacies of Georgia domestic relations law, and she pays attention to minute yet meaningful details that many less experienced attorneys would easily overlook. Kelly provided me with sound legal guidance including strategic recommendations that helped accomplish my objectives. I was impressed at every turn with her acumen and her knowledge of the legal authorities as they applied to the specific facts of my case. It was readily apparent throughout my divorce that I had the more skilled and experienced advocate on my side. Kelly is a consummate professional, and she obtained a very favorable result in my case. Kelly went above and beyond the call of duty to help me including even braving an impending winter storm to attend mediation for my case where we ultimately reached a resolution. I highly recommend Kelly Miles to anyone in need of legal representation in any aspect of domestic relations litigation in Georgia.

I had some serious and complicated residual issues from my divorce several years ago, and had previously been burned and set back by a few 'very seasoned' (and very terrible/burnt-out) attorneys, before Kelly. Based on my situation and prior experiences in court, I was fully expecting (and dreading) that my only option would be to return there, and fight for something with little chances of prevailing. I met with Kelly, gave her a pile of paperwork and notes to review, with the agreement that we would conference call soon to discuss her recommendations. During that initial meeting, Kelly impressed me with her both professional and caring review of my situation. She was quick to dismiss/filter things that weren't relevant, asked very direct questions, and outlined how we would progress. A few weeks later, when we conference called to review, she recommended three options, with the dreaded court date as #3 (last). Although I didn't believe that my ex-wife would accept anything, I agreed to start with Option #1, expecting it to lead to #2 and then #3. Kelly prepared what we needed for Option #1, sent it to me for approval, and then presented it to my ex-wife. To my surprise and relief, my ex accepted our requests. I firmly believe that what Kelly presented and how she presented it (tone) nudged my ex into agreement. I think that Kelly means business, and she was able to convey this to my ex in a non-threatening, yet motivating way. She has saved me a lot, because I believe most attorneys would have signed me up for court dates and lots of expense, more concerned for their billable hours than my welfare. Lost faith in or skeptical about attorneys? I was, big time. Kelly has restored my faith that there are good lawyers out there that care and want what is best for their clients. I highly recommend this professional. Thanks Kelly!

I hired Kelly specifically on a recommendation from a family member. I knew I needed someone who really knew what they were doing for my case, and knew I needed to be prepared for a potentially ugly fight. I made it clear from the beginning that I wanted to be fair, but not taken advantage of in resolving my case. Kelly was purely professional in her handling. She made sure I was prepared each step of the way, and worked with me to provide a fair and equitable settlement of my case. While Kelly is not the cheapest attorney out there, I knew going in that you get what you pay for. And I knew I better be prepared for a fight and not need to, rather than need to fight and be unprepared. Kelly's fees were reasonable for a top flight attorney, and quite frankly one of the best investments I think I have ever made. If you have a case where you know you will need an attorney who knows how the process works and can protect you in the difficult process of a divorce, I don't think you could find anyone better. I would highly recommend her.

Ms Bergeron took on my case after another attorney had done a "less than appropriate" job. She went above and beyond and was impeccable with her documentation. I wish I had found Nicole from the very beginning. I would highly recommend her to anyone! One smart cookie.

Two and a half years ago our very happy and peaceful life in retirement came to a very sudden halt. We were asked to drive 4-5 hour from our home in order to ensure the safety and welfare of our baby grandson. The Juvenile Court of Hall County, GA gave my wife and I temporary guardianship of our 10 month old grandson. Three weeks later when we returned to court it became clear to us that we would need a very good Lawyer in order to continue to do what was in the best interest of our grandson. I asked a few people for the name of a good family law attorney in Gainesville, GA. One name was always at the top of their list. It was Susan Brown, JD. Susan turned out to be "a godsend" and the best family lawyer I had seen in over 65 years of my professional life. Susan was a smart, experience attorney who had a gifted knowledge of Georgia family Law. I very highly recommend Susan Brown to help you with any family law matters. Thank you Susan

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Gainesville, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
