Cons
1
Potential to push clients to hire private investigators without clear necessity
“After the first consult meeting, Ms Washburn encouraged me that I had a good case and first thing was to hire PI for further investigation of other party. After some consideration, I met with her suggested PI , in her office at which time retainer fees were given to both.”
2
Billing practices that some clients find excessive or questionable
“She presented as pushy, arrogant, and forgetful, and eager to bill you for every minute. She is "the" stereotype lawyer, talking circles and billing.”

She was through and straight to the point. I was lazy about getting anything she needed. Her staff was fantastic.. divorce is messy, they kept my best interest at hand. I convinced my ex to deal exclusively with this law frim after her lawyer went through all her escrow. Margaret was more than happy to facilitate our situation.

Margaret has worked with me during a contentious battle to change the terms of my original divorce (finalized with a different attorney). She is very knowledgeable about other cases pertaining to my situation and has been tenacious and innovative in her handling of my case. I would trust her with anything.

Ms Washburn has 30+ years of experience and it undeniably shows in her work ethic and willingness to obtain he best result for her clients. Recently hired her to take care of some enormous fines that I had wrongfully been made responsible to pay for and within one courtroom visit she got every penny dismissed after maybe 30 mins of being there. It absolutely blew me away. Her relationship with the courtroom officials is exactly what you want in an attorney being that they clearly hold her in the highest of regards and respects based on her reputation and integrity. If you need honesty met with efficiency in an attorney then Margaret Washburn is who you need to call. She’s a slam dunk.

I have observed and worked with Margaret on many occasions. She is a general. She plans, she coordinates, and she executes. I have seen her painstakingly go over her cases with her clients and do everything possible to obtain the desired results. In the legal profession, not everyday is a home run and sometimes you have to take lemons and make lemonade. I can tell you from first hand experience that Margaret will do everything that she can think of to get results. Some cases are easier than others and she will take difficult files. She offers her clients hope where sometimes there wasn't any.

Mr. harrell in court had my DUI down graded to Wreck-less which for me was significant . He explained the offense and penalties which was significant . The Police report made this case almost unwinnable . Mr.Harrell dug deep into my driving history/behavior and told he would try to get the charge down graded to Wreck-less . I am very happy

I asked a friend, a practicing lawyer in Gwinnett, for a referral, "I need a bulldog, a lawyer that will make this other party apart sorry they ever filed suite against me" "Absolutely call Terry Lloyd". Terry was excellent from the first call till the verdict. He was very well prepared, reassuring and professional, he made the opposition look Ill prepared and completely out of their depth. We won convincingly and I got all of my legal fees back.

Mr. Terry L. Lloyd was very helpful in my case. He answered all my questions and explained how things work in the system and he answered my important calls. He gave me the results that other lawyers were unable to give. Mr. Terry Lloyd is such a nice person, he seems more like a family member than a lawyer. Mr. Lloyd is very professional, kind, trustworthy , and he gets straight to business. Since I employed him I felt very confident and things worked out way better than what I expected. I would use his expertise again and recommend him to family and friends.

My husband and I needed legal help and needed it quickly. I called Terry Lloyd not knowing what I would get in return as we do not live in Atlanta. I can honestly say he was responsive, personable, and brought results quickly. I would never hesitate to call him again and I would happily recommend him to others!!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lawrenceville, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
