Don’t use her. I did all the discovery myself and then she charged me for it. She did absolutely nothing to help my case. She was rude and obnoxious. She jacked up my bill every chance she could get.

She was highly recommended by a friend of mine. Making the decision about a divorce is hard. I did not realize how difficult it would be just to get a return call to schedule an appointment. I tried for 1 1/2 weeks. 3 calls. She was always busy and never had the professional courtesy of having anyone call me back to schedule an appointment or even tell me she was too busy to take me on. All I ask is for the courtesy of a call back. Have times changed so that it is too much to ask for a call back?

I was highly recommended by a friend who had used Judy King for his divorce and he was very happy with the end result. I am a survivor of domestic abuse. He abandoned me and walked away from all responsibilities, leaving me with all the debt and no income. I tried several time to get a divorce on my own, filing with the Court but then he fled the State and went into hiding. I was hoping not to use an Attorney so that we both could go on with our lives without heartache and costs. I was served divorce papers this April, 2016. I was extremely excited when the Police Officer delivered them thinking he had come to his senses and we could do a non-contested divorce. I was wrong. He still had his narcissistic personality and was out to get me. My friend told me to call Judy King. As soon as I had my first consultation meeting with Judy, I knew she was the one for me. Judy got right to the point and explained all that was involved. Judy is a no-nonsense, go-getter who only deals with the facts and I immediately felt a sigh of relief. Judy and her assistant/paralegal Kristen are a great team. They walked me through the process of getting all the paperwork done and were very patient and understanding of my emotional state. Judy is extremely knowledgeable and knew exactly how to handle my case. I am very thankful to have had Judy and Kristen on my team while going through such a stressful and emotional time. And, I can say now, that I am happily divorced with a most satisfactory result!! If you are reading my review, stop looking now and call Judy King because she is the best Attorney you could hire :)

Judy King was recommended to me by one of the leading attorneys in Gwinnett County & did outstanding job for my family in both Gwinnett and Fulton Counties. Her legal fees were much less than the fees the well known and overpaid opposing attys from Atlanta charged my ex's family.

After 20+ years together, my wife filed for divorce claiming irreconcilable differences. She wanted to take my home, my children, my dignity, and wanted me to pay for it. I was given referrals from several people - Judy was mentioned more than once. From my initial meeting with her and her assistant (Kristen), I knew I would be in no better hands ... and I was right! Divorce was the most terrifying, painful and stressful event I've ever had to go through. NO ONE could have protected me better than Judy King. She took the time to get to know me and my case and used her 30+ years of experience to build a strong strategy. She personified integrity through her honesty, and NEVER tried to create billable opportunities for the sake of extra fees. Every meeting/phone conversation had a purpose supporting the strategy of protecting me and my well-being. Judy is a straight-shooter, which I admire. She's well-aware of how emotional and exhausting the divorce process can be. There were times when emotions got the better of me and I could've said or done something stupid or unreasonable out of spite for my ex-wife due to the incredible amount of stress from the process. During those times, Judy protected me from myself. Her entire focus was to get me the best settlement possible, and if she felt I might do/say something which would hurt our chances, she made sure to stop it. Judy has a reputation for being extremely good in the courtroom - but that's not always needed. I wanted my ex-wife to SUFFER, as much as I was suffering. Judy made me realize that it's always better to get a good settlement that will allow you and your family to begin rebuilding your lives, rather than getting some form of revenge through the humiliation of a court proceeding (even if my ex-wife DID deserve it). Judy understands that life goes on beyond the divorce process, and that her clients need to be best positioned for that. I titled this review "Saved my Life" because Judy King (and Kristen) DID SAVE MY LIFE. My divorce took a year, and at the beginning I was an emotional wreck. I couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, and was both emotionally and physically exhausted. I didn't want this divorce, neither did my children. I was being dragged kicking and screaming down a path I never wanted to travel. Now, a year later, I'm beginning to feel like myself again. Too often, divorce cases favor the wife, even when there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Judy built an extremely strong case, which eventually forced my ex-wife to settle out of court for what basically equated to slightly above the bare minimum the law would allow. There is NO DOUBT in my mind that had I chose another attorney, I would not be in the same financial, physical or emotional state I am today. I truly believe that Judy King saved the rest of my life. We now live in a world where divorce attorneys advertise via any/all means possible. Most are just trying to get your money. Their goal is to get you through the divorce process quickly, caring less about fairness, and more about revenue. The big firms view divorcing couples as sheep, being lured by catchy advertising - but they don't take the time to work for you. Judy King "had my back" during the most difficult time of my life, and I'll be forever grateful. By no means am I wealthy. I'm a hard-working father who loves his kids and was blind-sided by who he thought was the love of his life for 20+ years. My ex-wife paid three times in attorneys fees that I did ... and she received a settlement half of what I initially offered. Judy is really, REALLY good at what she does. Judy King has been practicing law for 30+ years, has an extremely solid reputation; and doesn't spend a dime to advertise. That doesn’t just “happen”. Divorce is a life-changing process, you've got ONE SHOT to protect yourself. No one does that better than Judy King. Thanks Judy!

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lawrenceville, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
