Boyfriend was ASSAULTED by police officers during his incarceration, and this bottom of the barrel scum bag REFUSED to even hear the details of the case. If you are looking for lawyers who will do the right thing, stay far away from this guy. I won't rate him lower than one star, if that were possible, but sadly...that is a pipe dream. This guy deserves to be disbarred, and NEVER practice law EVER again.

In April 2016 I hired Attorney Stokes to assist in getting parole for my fiance. At the the time I hired him I presented all the court paperwork showing my fiance was convicted of armed robbery. Attorney Stokes stated it was a process and he could possibly be home for the holidays, except armed robbery is not eligible for parole, ever! Further, with the exception of one time and by his assistant about a week after hiring him, I did not receive one return phone call, only a copy of the letter from the parole board saying that armed robbery was not eligible for parole with a brief letter from Attorney Stokes that basically said, "here is the parole board's response..." I wish he's been honest at thr the beginning and told me that armed robbery was not eligible for parole and not that it was a process. I worked very hard for the legal fees paid to Attorney Stokes, very disappointed in his "parole specialty" practice, (his exact words).

This is by far the worst lawyer we have ever come across with. We were very unfamiliar with the judicial system when my boyfriend first ran into issues with the law. From the start, we had our reservations to hire him but he came highly recommended by someone with similar case circumstances. Little did we know. This lawyer is not honest, gives up false hopes and lies when telling you he is actively working on your case. This was confirmed when numerous times he could not remember the case itself and he would get it confused with another one. We had to constantly call to find out any progress on our case defense and it would take over a week to get a call back. There was an instance where we met with him and he thought he had the right case files and even addressed my boyfriend by someone else's name! All legal documents produced by him or his paralegal were riddled with typos. We literally built our own defense suggesting valid arguments based on the facts and our own research. When presented to him he would either dismiss them with no real reason as to why or he would never follow up on others even when he thought they were good to use. Please do your homework before you decide to hire him. He is not cheap and not worth the agony you go through with him when you know your case could be a winner and he simply does not deliver due to his lack of involvement, and blatantly shows he does have the best interest for you as a client. We should have fired him but we had already paid for his services. When a lawyer sits across from you while waiting for your verdict, and tells you it is a slam dunk and you know you will lose the case after witnessing his terrible performance, it is too late for you to do anything about it. We lost it but thank God we were able to hire a great team of lawyers who went beyond their duties to win our appeal and achieve what should have been the outcome of our trial.

Thoroughly prepared my Appeal and won having my sentence overturned. Very knowledgable with the court system. Paralegal was very supportive, and good at keeping us in the loop. mr. Stokes allows telephone calls, but does not do prison visits which is my only complaint. Price was very fair.

Shari assisted me with my legitimation and custody case as well as a TPO. She was attentive to my concerns and focused on the safety of my child. What should have been a simple process became a messy and unnecessarily complicated experience due to the other party, however, Shari was patient, compassionate, and sympathetic toward what I was having to go through. She was always readily available. She always responded to me within 48 hours. Great communicator. Excellent negotiator. And most importantly, she was relatable. Shari demonstrated expertise in the family law field and I would definitely be using her as my family law attorney should any future situations arise. Highly recommend !

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mableton, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
