Steve cook is not only a great attorney but a even better friend! Steve and I have known one another for over 25 years and in that time I have had a few legal problems concerning traffic violations which he promptly took care of for me of no charge also more recently I had three warrants for my arrest and was picked up and caught 3 felony drug charges I had my girlfriend call Steve on the 18th day in jail and he immediately got up there to see me. he told me that I was a good friend and that he was going to squash my probation and he was going to get my misdemeanor charge thrown out. and then the three felonies he was going to get reduced to misdemeanors in time served he was able to get probation which i was In violation of terminated. Then he was able to get the misdemeanor I had been charged with for giving a false name to law enforcement thrown out of court. and on the three felonies I got an even better deal I got probation and the felony charges will be expunged from my record upon completing a simple probation no fines no community service just report and stay off drugs and Steve did all of this for the amount of $400 he worked diligently every thing was handled fast and had me out of jail in less than 30 days considering all that I had pending against me legally that was absolutely amazing and he worked very fast to get me in front of the judge I cannot say enough about Steve he's a great man with a wonderful attitude he wants to help people that's his mission in life so if you need good representation and you're in a legal bind facing criminal charges I would absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt only recommend Steve Cook! you can take your chances with another attorney it's going to cost you more and the outcome will be uncertain Steve will let you know up front what the most likely probability is going to be he has good foresight when it comes to what the potential legal outcome will be that's what makes him one of the best attorneys around he's very affordable he's very fair he's not a crook he answers his own phone when his secretary is not in the office. he stays in touch with his clients he's very easy to reach and that in itself gives great comfort many attorneys once you give money you can't get in touch with them until you see them in court but Steve is not that way he will absolutely return your calls he will have his secretary give you information if he's not in and if you need a call back from him no worries he'll be in touch.

I had a shoplifting case that was completely accidental on my part. I was really nervous because I've never even received a traffic citation or ticket in my life. Steve made me feel very confident in myself and the case being unfair. Keep us able to help get thrown out and completely expunged. His price is wonderful and fair! I would definitely recommend. Thanks for everything Steve!

Top review highlights

Pros
1
Responsive and attentive to clients' needs
“Steve was very responsive to me and my supporters doing leg work to help the case.. He is a stand up guy and a good attorney especially considering the Cobb County shark tank of corrugation he swims in.”
2
Honest and realistic in assessments
“Steve tells it like it is even as he will try to do whatever he can for you. Sometimes your attorney will tell you what you don't want to hear. Still, you need to listen because that's why you hire them.”
3
Affordable and fair pricing
“His price is wonderful and fair! I would definitely recommend.”
4
Successful in negotiating plea deals and getting charges reduced or dismissed
“Attorney Steve Cook stepped in and completed my criminal case, after my attorney threatened to withdraw from my case, just two days from my calendar call. My case was set for trial the following week, and Steve was able to negotiate a plea deal with the prosecutor that the previous attorney was not able to accomplish.”
5
Highly experienced and respected in the local legal community
“Attorney Steve Cook has successfully practiced law for over 27 years in Cobb County. He is highly respected throughout the judicial system in Cobb County and his ability and skills out match his peers.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness in some cases
“He told me not to call him that he would contact me if he needed to talk to me. A year later, I was pulled over on a minor incident and was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear. I contacted his office and Ms. Shaw first stated I had only paid half of the bill, I gave her the receipt no and proof they had cashed my checks, she then said they had tried and tried to contact me and were not able to.”
2
Potential issues with client representation and follow-through
“A few days later, he went to visit my daughter again, he did not look (to my daughter) like the same man, knew nothing of her case and acted as if he never met her before.”

Mr. Prado represented me on a case where I was being harassed by a shady bill collector. He worked very hard on the case and putin extensive time and effort in my behalf. He kept my updated with the developments and offered sound advice throughout the entire procedure. In the end his fees were more than fair and he helped resolve the matter with the best outcome considering everything wer had to go through. I am comfortable referring future business to him.

Mr. Welch was assigned to me though Cobb County Courts years ago. After helping me with that case, I hired him for several more. From a divorce to a DUI. He is the ONLY attorney I would ever use and have since recommended him to others.

Having Eric Welch represent me in my DUI case was a godsend. I was facing a 3rd DUI and I was very concerned about my future. I have never felt like previous lawyers I spoke to listened to my struggles nor cared until now. He was always readily available to answer all me questions. He took my case extremely seriously and seemingly personal. Eric Welch was able to get the courts to reduce my charge to a Reckless Driving and I couldn’t have been happier with his services. Had I retained any other attorney, I do not think I would have obtained the result that I did. I highly recommend him.

Mr. Welch represented me on a case which most others considered unwinnable. His knowledge and willingness to delve into the subject matter, research it, and ultimately win a victory for his client was gratifying. Add to that a good sense of humor, and you've got excellent representation.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Marietta, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
