My husband and I ran into some very difficult legal complications 1 week before our adopted-baby-to-be was born due to our status as Canadians living in the US on work visas. Although we had satisfied all the requirements to adopt, we were notified at the last minute that due to recent changes in adoption law, our adoption would be considered international (despite living in California since 2016 and purchasing a home a week before this took place). The agency handling our adoption told us they could no longer help us and recommended finding an international adoption lawyer. Along came Irene, who right from the start was reassuring, friendly, and professional. Irene took up our cause and reached out to the agency that dropped us and convinced them to have their legal team collaborate with her to create a case for the courts that argued in our favor. Irene is someone you want in your corner because she has a lot of friends in high places, many of whom she contacted in order to streamline our case. After working with Irene for just 3 weeks, and only 2 weeks after the birth of our son, we were able to take him home with us to California. Since our return, Irene continues to check in on our son. The cost of her services is remarkably inexpensive for the expertise, compassion, and resourcefulness that Irene brings to the table. Thank you "Auntie" Irene - we will forever be in your debt!!!

I am returning to the States after 10 years of living abroad in Costa Rica. I am a US citizen but I am bringing my wife and daughter from Coast Rica with me. Irene is assisting us in this process. She has provided to date excellent services. She is extremely knowledgeable of the process and makes us all feel at ease with her professional handling of our petitions. I would highly recommend Irene Steffas for your needs in the area of immigration.

My husband and I, in a very round about way, found ourselves embarking on a journey adoption from Sint Maarten, a country with no current path to adoption. We found out mid way through we needed to work through a Hague approved attorney or agency. There were no agencies working in Sint Maarten so we immediately started looking for an attorney. We are SO happy we were able to find Irene and her team. Irene was VERY frank from the get go. She didn't sugarcoat anything which we appreciated so much. We had been told this and that and were given false hope a lot throughout this process and were very discouraged, so to have someone so open and honest about the hurdles we would need to get through was so refreshing. Irene was able to outline all of the steps her team would take to see this through. She was open with the fact that it wasn't a sure deal, but that they would take steps to analyze the entire situation before moving us forward and would do anything in their power to help us adopt these boys. They have taken point on some of the paperwork and processes that were bogging us down and causing a lot of frustration, she and her team clearly know how to navigate the adoption legal system. They've always kept in tight communication throughout the entire process. I've never felt like I can't reach out to Irene directly if I had questions and she has always been so responsive (along with her team). Our adoption isn't complete yet, but things are looking good. I would absolutely recommend Irene to anyone who is looking to adopt, especially in a situation where you may be paving the way. It's clear she is passionate about her work and her clients and I will be ever grateful we made the choice to partner with her and her team in this process.

We used Irene Steffas and her team to fulfil the adoption of our grandson, through the Hague Adoption process. We live in the USA, and our grandson was born in the UK. The whole International adoption process is so complicated and involved, that we didn't even know what we didn't know! It takes a real team of experts to navigate through the process. Irene, Jyotika and Beatriz were our contacts at Steffas. They are incredibly knowledgeable, right up to date on the ever-changing process, pro-active, so helpful. Everyone involved in our case was on the same page - which was really great. Jyotika was our front-line contact. She was great about keeping us up to date on progress, answering all our many questions, very quick to respond to phone calls and e-mails, and several times she talked us through the longest, darkest hours, of a long, complicated and stressful process. Irene and her team were even in a position to educate the UK local authority, and UK attorney, on the Hague process. Without their knowledge and expertise, we're sure the process would have taken much longer. One of the best tools we had, was a binder, which Steffas provided us with. It contained documents and copies of everything we needed to finalize our application with the Embassy in London. Fabulous tool. The overall organization was awesome. We could not have been in better hands.

"I had the pleasure of having Nicole Westmoreland representing me on a gun-related case in miami Florida, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome—she got the case dismissed! Nicole was extremely professional throughout the entire process and delivered exceptional results. Her communication was always clear, and she kept me informed every step of the way. While her services were on the expensive side, I truly believe you get what you pay for, and Nicole was worth every penny. I highly recommend her to anyone in need of a top-tier attorney."

Ms Westmoreland is special compared to most lawyers. What separates her most is the fact she actually cares. Most lawyers separate emotion which makes them just do work and go home and forget it about it. Mrs Westmoreland has passion and uses it to fight for you. Dealing with her taught me that if a lawyer doesn't actually care they are not the right lawyer!!

In Dealing with Nicole I realized I had the wrong lawyers all along. Nicole Westmoreland won my case for me. Whenever I called her she answered. I asked her how was she always available to answer my calls and give me so much attention and she replied she doesn't take every case that comes her way. She said if she is flooded with cases how could she effectively represent anyone. She just wouldn't have the time. She just makes sense !! Thank you for everything attorney Westmoreland !!

Mr. Welch was assigned to me though Cobb County Courts years ago. After helping me with that case, I hired him for several more. From a divorce to a DUI. He is the ONLY attorney I would ever use and have since recommended him to others.

Having Eric Welch represent me in my DUI case was a godsend. I was facing a 3rd DUI and I was very concerned about my future. I have never felt like previous lawyers I spoke to listened to my struggles nor cared until now. He was always readily available to answer all me questions. He took my case extremely seriously and seemingly personal. Eric Welch was able to get the courts to reduce my charge to a Reckless Driving and I couldn’t have been happier with his services. Had I retained any other attorney, I do not think I would have obtained the result that I did. I highly recommend him.

Mr. Welch represented me on a case which most others considered unwinnable. His knowledge and willingness to delve into the subject matter, research it, and ultimately win a victory for his client was gratifying. Add to that a good sense of humor, and you've got excellent representation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Marietta, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
