Marriage is hard. Divorce is even harder. I was married for 7 years. It was suppose to be forever, and my world came crashing down. A friend recommended Marcy Hanks and her team as my lawyer. During the consultation, I was so nervous. Nervous to tell her the things that should only stay intimate within a marriage. She assured me that I could tell her everything and that she was there to support me. They always say that the only one’s that win in a divorce are the lawyers. I disagree with this statement whole heartedly. One point during the divorce Marcy called me, not as my lawyer but as a Christian friend, she had been reading messages that my spouse and I were sending each other back and forth. She wanted to make sure that we did everything in our power to save this marriage. I assured her that we had: marriage counseling, Re-Engage, Small groups, and an intensive marriage retreat. We were two broken people who truly loved each other to the best of our ability. We were just slowly dancing in a burning room. Marcy and her team were there for me every step of the way. Making sure that my girls and I were taken care of financially and emotionally. To work for someone while they are going through the most painful time in their lives and to do it with so much love and compassion, that is what makes a good lawyer great. Thank you Marcy. Thank you to your entire team.

I hired Marcy to represent and fight for me during an ugly custody battle. It was my first time ever dealing with the court system and was extremely nervous and scared to death that I wouldn’t receive all the outcomes that I hoped for. Marcy went above and beyond to call me down, talk me through every document, laid out a clear plan of action, and communicated every detail of every thing that took place during the months before it was settled. I would highly recommend her to anybody seeking the absolute best lawyer around! She is beyond a fantastic lawyer but better yet an incredible person. She fought for my rights, as a single mother who was never married to my child’s father, and never let me lose faith or hope!! She will forever be in our hearts for everything she did for my family!!

Words cannot express how wonderful Marcy Hanks is as an attorney. She and her staff are the definition of professionalism. I always felt confident knowing I had such competent professionals handling my case. Marcy represented me when I was seeking full custody of my three children. Being a man, I was extremely worried that I would not have a chance, and my children would not be heard. My first consultation with Marcy quickly dispelled any worries that I had. Marcy provided me a detailed and strategic legal plan during our first meeting. From that day, she executed that plan to perfection. She was relentless and meticulous! The correspondence I received during this lengthy case was excellent. Marcy and her staff always kept me well informed. I honestly felt like I was communicating with family because it was so genuine and frequent. Marcy's confidence during this stressful and emotional time was exactly what I needed. It inspired me and kept me going! Her courtroom preparation and demeanor was excellent. It was very comforting to know I had the best attorney in the room, which was evident by me gaining full physical custody as the outcome! If you're looking for an extremely intelligent, charismatic, and strategic attorney, look no further. Marcy is the best there is. A fantastic person through and through. She helped change me and my children's lives forever.

When I was looking for a Family Law attorney, I wanted one that knew the law, would aggressively represent me and would fight to protect my interests. When I met Chris Piner, I knew I found the person I was looking for. He offered me great legal advice on how to deal with my case and actively pursued settlement offers. When these offers were rejected, he argued my case in court and did not stop until he had what he wanted and subsequently won. Although my relationship with Chris has always been professional, he makes me feel like a friend after each and every conversation. His confidence lifted the burdens and stress off of my shoulders. Hands down I will have Christopher Piner represent me in the future.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Monroe, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
