I hired Alexa to represent me in my long-distance military divorce case. I was overseas and my ex-spouse in the U.S. Alexa demonstrated an extraordinary level of intelligence, strategic acumen, and professional integrity and honesty.. Her ability to quickly assess the complexities of my case and devise a comprehensive legal strategy was nothing short of impressive. It was clear that Alexa possessed a sharp mind, thought several steps ahead, and anticipated potential challenges before they arose. This proactive approach was instrumental in ensuring that my interests were consistently protected. Her quick wit and empathy set her apart. Despite the fast-paced nature of the legal process, Alexa never lost sight of the human element involved in this case. She approached each situation with fairness, patience, and a deep understanding of the emotional toll that divorce can take on all parties involved. In the end, the result from my case was beyond expectation. Brilliant! Hire her.

If I could give this firm and their attorneys 6 out of 5 stars, I most certainly would. By the grace of God another law firm referred me to Shewmaker and Lewis. Due to my unique custody issue, this other law firm told me that Steve Shewmaker would be THE attorney I needed. When Steve and I did meet, I could tell this was finally a man who had empathy and acted with a sense of urgency. Steve and Tuscan Fairfield went above and beyond with their resources for months to help with this very difficult situation. There was constant communication throughout every stage of the process. When the court date was finally upon us, once again I was amazed at how good these two men were. A dynamic duo of a young, very articulate and intelligent Tuscan Fairfield combined with a tenacious and experienced Steve Shewmaker. This law firm put my family and I in a position I could not have ever dreamed of, a far cry from the position I was in this time one year ago. This is not the law firm you want, it is the law firm you NEED.

I have been working with Tuscan Fairfield at Shewmaker and Lewis Law Firm. Tuscan represented me in my continuing divorce saga. I was super impressed with his knowledge, professionalism and patience. I have used Shewmaker and Lewis Law Firm before and worked with Steve. Steve is both brilliant and amazing in/out of court. I have been so impressed with this firm that I would recommend them to my friends and family. Hands down the best attorneys I have ever had represent me. 10 starts for outstanding service and excellent communication⭐️.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you're in need of a powerhouse legal team for your divorce or family law issues, look no further than Lewis & Shewmaker LLC! I had the pleasure of working with Patty (aka Patty the Red Nose Pitbull) and Bonnie (aka Bonnie the Bully), and let me tell you, these ladies mean business! I started my legal journey with a cheaper attorney and quickly found myself lost in the sauce—completely overwhelmed and drowning in paperwork. Then I found Patty and her team, and they threw me a lifeline. Not only did they save me thousands of dollars, but they also navigated the complexities of my case with the precision of a Swiss watch. From the moment I walked into the office, I was greeted by David at the front reception, whose warm smile and professional demeanor set the tone for my entire experience. And let's not forget Steve's bathroom—yes, you read that right. Steve's bathroom is a work of art, and I'm not just talking about the plumbing! (See pictures below for proof that bathrooms can indeed be fabulously decorated.) Patty's tenacity and sharp legal mind are truly something to behold. She fought for my rights like a true pitbull, never backing down until justice was served. Bonnie, on the other hand, is a bulldog in the courtroom—relentless, tough, and always one step ahead of the opposition. Together, they are an unstoppable force. Everyone at Lewis & Shewmaker LLC made me feel like a valued client, and their dedication to my case was evident every step of the way. If you want a legal team that will fight tooth and nail for you, give you honest advice, and maybe even give you a few decorating tips, this is the place to go. Thank you, Patty, Bonnie, David, Steve, and the entire team at Lewis & Shewmaker LLC. You turned a stressful situation into a triumph, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Ms. Fortunately was truly a Godsend! I was at a low point in my marriage and NEEDED out! I was concerned because my now ex husband was incarcerated and I didn’t k ow where to begin. I saw a billboard one day while heading to Atlanta and I sent an email to Ms. Fortin and that is where the magic began. It took 5 months from start to finish ONLY because my ex was dragging his feet about signing the papers. Not only was she an excellent and diligent attorney; but, when I was emotional, she encouraged and consoled me. She said she understood! The personal touch was evident and felt. I never met her in person and was able to handle my entire divorce via email and phone calls. She knows her laws, she knows what it takes to get it done and she helps guide you during the entire process. She constantly keeps you updated on the progress of your divorce and i would recommend you do yourself a favor and retain her for your legal needs. She was also quite affordable! Thank you Attorney Fortin for such excellent and professional service!

Phillip was not the first attorney I contracted, but I am grateful I hired him when I did. I learned early on that the complexity of my case required an attorney that is knowledgeable, experienced, and personable in order to have a successful outcome. My future and that of our daughter demanded it. I cannot thank Phillip and Becky enough for successfully helping us over every hurdle with confidence.

I hired Phil McCurdy to represent me after Firing my previous attorney, two years into a lawsuit. My previous attorney acted in a way that would make you think he was working for the other side. A friend recommended Phil to me and I wish that I asked that friend for his recommendation in the beginning. Phil was able to provide some light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. If you’re looking for an attorney, who will care, will be your advocate, and is just an overall refreshingly genuine human being; look no further, you want Phil McCurdy in your corner!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Peachtree Corners, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
