My family hired Allison when my autistic teenage son was starting back to public school after being homeschooled for a couple of years. We were traumatized from the rigmarole of IEPs and I decided I wasn’t messing around anymore. We had to re-up with Allison one time, but we didn’t use all of the second installment, even though we had 3-4 lonnnngggg IEP meetings. After all of that, my son has a 1:1 para that is with him all day and he just finished his freshman year with 7 As and 1 B. I never dared to hope that this would be his reality, but it is! He’s so bouyed by this transformation that he’s telling me he wants to tackle reading (his greatest challenge) this summer so that he can take AP classes junior year. I’m so thrilled by the outcomes of hiring Allison- best money I’ve ever spent!!!! Thank you, Allison; you have transformed my son’s future!!!

As a parent with Special Needs children, I wanted to provide them with every opportunity to have a meaningful life. 12 years ago we realized that we needed assistance to ensure the School District was providing them an environment to achieve this and we engaged Allison for assistance. Allison took a personal approach for each of my sons in representing us and helped develop meaningful and measurable goals specific to their needs - held the School District Accountable. Over the years I saw that she was respected and her input was welcomed by the School District. Allison was assertive when needed to make sure both of my sons receive the individual IEP and resources that were required for their growth. I have recommended Allison to many people and will continue to do so. We will be forever grateful for her professionalism, commitment and positive impact she has had on our entire family.

On a personal level, I really appreciated Allison's straightforward approach, as I knew we would always get the honest and feasible answer from her. On a professional level, we appreciated and admired how Allison had a friendly, collegial approach with the IEP team, yet pushed effectively when needed. I would recommend Allison to any parent looking for effective support during their child's IEP!

Bill Swank is an exceptionally compassionate and extremely competent litigation attorney who won what I thought was a hopeless and unjust case against me. He not only won my case but was successful in getting all fines and damages dismissed as well as saving my driving record! I cannot praise him highly enough!

I am so happy that I had Mr. Swank as my attorney. I received a ticket for an accident that was not my fault. There was not any contact with my car. The ticket was a civil and criminal matter. I called the right one to handle this case. Mr. Swank and his team were knowledgeable and took care of everything from gathering all the information and being stellar in the courtroom. We won our case and I received no points on my license. Mr. Swank cares and he will do his best to not only fight for your case, but he is patient and thorough in all that he does. I was a mess and scared because I am a teacher and was concerned about my license, but Mr. Swank took everything in account and did what was best. He would say trust me and this is not his first rodeo!! He is just the best and I thank God for him, his professionalism, and his awesome team. Thank you so much Mr. Swank. Jennifer G.

I was referred to Michael Burns (and the firm he works for) for some necessary actions to put my estate in order. Although a difficult topic to deal with, Michael made it easy. He is personable and professional; most importantly, he develops a trusting relationship. I was very pleased with all my interactions with Micael and with the product he delivered. I'm an engineer with no legal background and he clearly walked me through every step of the process. I couldn't be happier.

As the Executor of my father's estate, Michael Burns kept me sane during the two year Estate Settling. He was always responsive as he guided me through my father's estate. Working with both my accountant and the partnerships, his knowledge and direction made a very stressful time much easier with his constant communication and knowledge. I am highly recommending him!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Roswell, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
