Ms. Azar was referred to me by my estate planning attorney for a counseling regarding a divorce settlement which involved child custody and property settlement matters. I interviewed several attorneys before selecting her. I chose her because she was confident in the outcomes I desired. Other attorneys interviewed came off as arrogant and doubtful of my desired goals. She knew what I needed and she made sure I understood my rights under family law and the obligations of my former spouse. She navigated me through a difficult process and helped to keep the best interests of myself and my child in the forefront of my decisions and negotiations. She spent numerous hours, at my request and at hours that accommodated my work schedule, in telephone consultation. I understood her fee structure and her billing was fair and straightforward. Without Ms. Azar I would not have obtained the divorce agreement that I feel was fair and also provided the protection and security I needed to carry on my life after the divorce. Subsequent to my divorce I returned to Ms. Azar for consultation on several family law matters. Each time I found my investment in her professional advice and service was well spent. I am very grateful that I had Ms. Azar representing me and I would highly recommend her legal services related to divorce, child custody and support, and property settlement.

Back in 2007, when I asked a friend for a good lawyer to help me with child support and custody issues, she heartily recommended Dana Azar. My first meeting with Dana was not exactly smooth, because she insisted on no emotion, and highlighting the issues and exactly what needed to be done. With this focus, she came in and beat a very experienced lawyer on his home turf. Since then, my ex has field charges several times, and I have had to file counter charges. We have won every single time, and in fact, I have had to hold Dana back on several issues, because I did not want my ex to be hurt too much financially or incarcerated. She worked with witnesses, one of my children, a therapist, and hundreds of emails to ensure that I was able to get positive results. I recommend Dana without reservation.

Truly caring attorney and staff. This is a highly experienced team that works continuously for each individual client. Phone calls are quickly answered, issues managed, and problems are solved. The most remarkable part is how well he and his staff maintain realistic expectations and stay on point about all aspects of his case.

Mr. Smith, with the addition of his staff was very good to me when I had a personal injury case. Though the case went on for a while, it was all a matter of a process that Mr. Smith handled efficiently. Him and his staff always kept me up to date with everything that dealt with my case, and I am very appreciative of the service he has provided for me. I would definitely recommend him for any personal injury matters to anyone!

Mr. Debaun is an excellent elder law and estate attorney with years of experience. We met him in 1998 to help us with our sick elderly father who had no will. My dad and mom had separated but dad was too sick to speak for himself and the finances were a mess. There are so many "always changing" laws concerning nursing homes and will documents you would not believe it. To avoid a lot of headaches hire a lawyer like Mr. Debaun who specializes in elder law. After going through all of the problems with my dad's estate, we learned as a family to plan ahead. Mr. Debaun worked with our mother to prepare her will long before she got sick and passed in 2011. Mr. Debaun will helped solve VERY difficult family issues (bank account theft) back in 2006. It is hard to know when your parents are not capable of staying alone or managing their bills. He will help you. The office employees and other attorneys are very professional. Just call because believe me, you don't want the state of Georgia handling the nursing home care or the estate without a will.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tucker, Georgia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
