Cons
1
Poor customer service and lack of communication
“I've been calling once, twice or three times a week for the same reason, a status update: 'Have my documents been mailed to the address that I provided you?' Everytime I call same story. They ask me to spell my name and they ask for my phone number so that they can contact me. I provide this information but no one calls.”
2
Ineffective representation and lack of advocacy
“I had Barrie as my lawyer and while he was nice I didn't feel he argued my case with much enthusiasm and he was quite wimpy against the opposing lawyer. I felt I had to step in and argue my own case in court as Barrie wasn't effective.”
3
Overpriced services
“They were a little on the high side in '97 in my opinion but their rates haven't increased too much since then (now 2011).”
4
Unprofessional conduct and rude behavior
“Had a brief phone consultation with Bob Young he was not helpful at all and ended up hanging up on me. Very rude and unprofessional.”
5
Lack of follow-through and poor record-keeping
“After contacting the office several times with a secretary taking my name and number only to not have anyone confirm or call back for three different days on three different occasions I definitely was able to see how the Company operates. Very unprofessional and a bad example for someone who claims they are there to help.”

No words can express how grateful and blessed we are to meet with Attorney Blake Goodman and his staff. They helped us every step of the way and kept us updated. All the staff are friendly and supportive. I highly recommend them to anyone who is going through financial difficulties and challenges, right when you leave the office you feel relieved.

After being frustrated with trying to keep up with the process. I gave Danielle Beavers law office a call. She has a friendly attentive office staff and Danielle made herself available by phone or email anytime which was great. She spent time guiding and coaching me before my hearing. She did such a great job the judge thanked her! If you are searching for a professional caring law office, I would recommend Danielle Beavers.

After being denied with the SSID I did not have hope, but when talking to Danielle she took all my fears and doubts away after taking the time to listen to my situation and after reviewing my case there was finally some comfort knowing she had everything in hand. Listen if you have a disability claim with Social Security don't bother calling anyone else! Just CALL DANIELLE and let her sort it out for you! I promise you won't be sorry! Thanks again Danielle!

After being denied 3 times for SSDI, I was scared depressed and frustrated.I had no idea what to do. I couldn't work, was in constant pain and seeing multiple drs who all agreed that I wouldn't be able to work a full time job again. At the end of my rope I decided to contact a lawyer. I called Danielle and it was the best decision I ever made. Even amoungst this pandemic of Covid-19 Danielle managed to walk me though a very overwhelming processes of a hearing. This was my final shot and she prepared me for the process. I was terrified but Danielle made sure I was ready. I still didnt know what to think till she called me after the hearing to let me know that We had won our case and that I also would be elegiable for Medicare ! I cant thank her enough. Now I dont have to worry about the financial stresses of seeing the drs I need to and starting my healing journey. My husband and I both thank you Danielle and cant express our gratitude enough. If your considering a lawyer dont hesitate to call Danielle and let her work her magic. She was great and kept me apprised evey step of the way begining to end.

Diane C. Haar has a wonderful team, very comprehensive, very prepared. We had social security disability case. The office is professional and prompt in all of the responses. The process went from being frustrating and confusing when I was doing it on my own to straightforward and although it still took a long time, the Attorney and her team was completely supportive, knowledgeable and well informed. We were completely supported all along the way. They are very good at screening the case and they are very honest whether or not the case has merit. Even afterward, when I had questions the office staff was there to answer questions and help with the bureaucracy.

Came to my hospital bed to interview me for my case, the system is backed up but she never failed to keep me updated as to my case's schedule. Worked with me to identify my doctors, hospital records, surgery, etc. and kept it concise and focused on my injury/disability. Also treated me with kindness and her associates are extremely helpful and informative so if you cannot reach Ms. Harr, you will get someone who WILL help you get in touch with her. A great group of human beings, I felt well taken care of and respected and listened to, for once.

When searching for a disability lawyer online, it is easy to be swept up into a giant mainland firm that may not always understand the unique landscape of Hawaii Veterans and residents. I was very pleased to see Diane C. Haar listed as an approved lawyer on Veterans Disability website. She knows the correct person to reach out to and how to get the job done. We are extremely grateful for her professional guidance. Diane C. Haar takes the time to listen with genuine compassion and concern. She provides prompt, personal attention and has proven to be an excellent lawyer. During the early onset of Covid she and her team responded with timely and useful legal advice. They have been an amazing source of information and advised us on programs that we did not even know existed. She successfully advised us on my daughter's military and SSDI disability claims.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Honolulu, Hawaii?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
