I put my case in Alen’s trust and he came through. At times I was frustrated and impatient and he assured me he was on the right path. He was 100% correct. I highly recommend him.

I hired Alen after letting go of my previous attorney on the Big Island where my case was located. This proved to be the best decision EVER, because not only did we win, but also because Alen was so kind, considerate, and most importantly determined! It’s unfortunate to be in a situation where you need a criminal attorney, but when you do, it’s nice to have one who has empathy towards you and what you are going through. Alen is highly knowledgeable of the law, impressive in the court room, and was completely motivated to win my case. He was always quick to respond to any questions that I had, proactive with the case, paid attention to the smallest of details, and worked extremely hard from beginning to end. I cannot say enough about how great of an attorney Alen Kaneshiro is. Alen is very talented at what he does, and I am so grateful that he took my case!

Hands down the best decision! Once finding out I was under investigation for a misdemeanor (yet very serious) allegation, I consulted with nearly a dozen attorneys. Alen was by far the most responsive, professional, helpful, and practical of all I spoke to, so I hired him. While some lawyers wanted to "wait it out" and see what the State was going to do, Alen engaged immediately and in the end, the prosecutor did not file charges in my case. His ability to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and provide candid support about the case was reassuring during an extremely scary/confusing time. His patient-level headed approach to analyzing the details and compassion for his clients is crystal clear. If you want a responsive and knowledgeable professional who is no doubt "on your team", he's the lawyer you want.

We all mess up sometimes. We all make mistakes. That's just human nature. Bottom line..if you want a chance in court, you need to hire Alen Kaneshiro. After what he did for me, I wouldn't hire anyone else. I was referred to Alen Kaneshiro through a friend who received a DUI. My particular case was also a petty misdemeanor in the state of Hawaii. I consulted with two other criminal defense attorneys before speaking with Alen. Each of them gave me options, but neither of them were optimistic about the outcome. They mentioned certain options were off the table. When I spoke with Alen during our initial consultation, he was very understanding and humble. He broke down the situation for me so that I could understand what was really going on and what I was up against. He then laid out his strategy that same night, presenting me with several options and broke down the likelihood of success for each. He was honest with me, but still optimistic. So we went to trial. Alen was a true professional both in and out of court. As a result of his efforts, my case was dismissed. I can't thank him enough for giving me a second chance.

When we got to Hawaii we are unsure how to proceed with immigration for our two adopted boys. Maile and Stella helped us out so much, they literally did everything for us possible. It was a nerve racking time in our life, fast forward two-years and everything is complete and our boys are now US Citizens. For two-years they cared for our family like we were there own family. No question about it, we went to the right people.

I reached out to Hirota and Associates in December 2015 after receiving a denial for my Green Card application (through marriage). My husband and I had filled out the initial paper work ourselves and had attended the interviews before being denied. I was distraught and terrified when I thought my family would be broken apart but Maile and the team immediately took on my case, working so hard to make sure that would not happen. This team of incredible women didn’t just help me resolve my case; they did it in under a year, for an excellent price and also with care, attention and compassion for myself and my family. Maile is honest, transparent and in constant contact at vital times. Because of Hirota and Associates my family are still together. Mahalo so much for your support Maile and Co.

Having to find a lawyer for Debt Collection was a difficult thing to go through because I knew nothing about it. Mr. Chow, and just as importantly his firm, were very knowledgeable and supportive. I was a little surprised to have an interaction with a lawyer I felt I shourld write about. Porter, McGuire, Kiakona and Chow educated me prior to laying out my options. I never felt pressured to take his course of action, but once I did, they were EXTREMELY effective. I would recommend them to anyone, and from what have researched, their success rates in debt collection is exceptional.

Bryson and his team at PMKC (Porter, McGuire, Kiakona, Chow LLP) get the job done! We had gone through several law firms in the last 12 years previously before hiring them on for our collection issues 3 years ago. They were able to collect debts from residents that had been uncollectable from previous firms. They are not only professional, but have acted swiftly to enforce our bi-laws to prevents large amounts being owed by our 546 owner owned townhouses. Our account receivable has never looked better. I am totally sold on using Bryson and PMKC. Porter MMaintecnes and

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Honolulu, Hawaii?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
