Had a very great consultation with David Robert Squeri III. He was cordial, respectful, but above all knowledgeable in Real Estate matters. Not only was he well versed in current law that applied to me, but he also gave me insight as to how to understand the law. Based on meeting with him, I have better direction and can feel empowered with the knowledge in real estate. I highly recommend setting an appointment and hiring him for your needs. His attention to detail and ability to explain all aspects is a skillset you absolutely want on your side.

When you're dealing with things like DV and custody, the last thing you need is to be used and abused by your lawyer/firm, someone who is supposed to advocate for and care about you. I was with this firm for about a year. I was forced to switch to 3 different lawyers and was charged each time. DO NOT go with this firm. The first lawyer I had was so cold and gave bad legal advice that ended up screwing up my case. I was with the second lawyer for about a month before they switched me again. Again, I was charged each time for each new lawyer to review my case and to meet with them to catch them up. It was traumatizing because I'm going through a custody battle and DV case so each time I had to explain again about how my soon to be ex-husband is abusing and has abused me and my children. I've also been charged even when THEY had to reschedule a meeting. It was unreal. They called me a couple hours prior and I graciously agreed. Thankfully I watched the bills because they had the nerve to charge me for that call. It seems like they are very scattered, unorganized and greedy. I acknowledge that lawyers deserve to be paid but they absolutely went too far. One of my lawyers I had literally called me the wrong name in court multiple times. One time mispronouncing it and one time calling me someone else's name entirely. It was humiliating. She also filed papers from someone else's case with my case papers. It was a nightmare! I'm so thankful I left and I now have a lawyer who genuinely cares.

Mr. Liebenguth was prompt and informative when initially seeking his consultation and service. I appreciate his approach as it’s geared towards understanding what your concerns are and educating you on his services before requesting payment. He is very knowledgeable about Military processes and without him representing me I believe my outcome would have been negative. Having him in my corner gave me so much peace of mind while going through a stressful situation. I strongly recommend hiring Mr. Liebenguth for representation to ensure your process is fair and just.

Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable and experienced attorneys
“Nathan's knowledge of Hawaii real estate regulations, statutes and case law is impressive. He is an expert at dealing with people and is a master negotiator.”
2
Excellent communication and responsiveness
“Nathan was very professional, thorough and prompt. His responses were always lightning fast, even after hours.”
3
Trustworthy and ethical
“Nathan Natori is very knowledgeable, amiable, and truly approachable. He is fully competent and conducts his work in a very ethical manner.”
4
Efficient and cost-effective
“Nathan explained the sales process from the seller's perspective and walked me through the purchase agreement draft. He explained each item of the purchase agreement in detail and made it easy for me to understand. I was charged for only 2 hours of his time, and with his guidance the completed sale cost less than 1% of the sale price.”
5
Compassionate and understanding
“Myles took my case when I was a child facing some serious adult charges. Nobody on this island could get me less than a life sentence, now I am a free man. Myles never missed a hearing and fought for me for over 10 years!”
Cons
1
Unresponsive and neglectful of clients
“Throughout my divorce proceedings, it felt as though I was left to fend for myself, with little to no support from Attorney Ann. Trying to get Attorney Ann to take action or even respond to my inquiries was a constant struggle.”
2
Overly focused on billing and fees
“It seems like they are very scattered, unorganized and greedy. I acknowledge that lawyers deserve to be paid but they absolutely went too far.”
3
Unprofessional and disruptive behavior
“Instead of resolving conflict, he greatly contributed to an atmosphere of destructive conflict. I would not recommend representation by Breiner due to his crude, beligerant, arrogant, and unprofessional behavior in and outside the court.”
4
Lack of empathy and concern for clients
“It really feels like she's got the best interest of the other party at hand over ours. It seems like she's too scared to fight for what we are asking.”
5
Slow and drawn-out case resolution
“My divorce proceedings dragged on for almost three long years, causing immense stress and financial strain.”

We are extremely pleased with the outcome of our case and have Shim & Chang to thank for it. Our case was a difficult personal injury case. Never having been a party to a legal matter like this, we had no idea what to expect, but from the beginning, the attorneys explained every step of the process, in terms that we understood. They were professional, responsive, patient, thorough and most importantly, realistic. We were treated with courtesy and respect by both the attorneys and their staff. We highly recommend the firm to anyone looking for exceptional representation on a personal injury case.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Honolulu, Hawaii?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
